NetDrawisaprogramfordrawingsocialnetworks.

OverviewofFeatures

MultipleRelations.Youcanreadinmultiplerelationsonthesamenodes,andswitchbetweenthem（orcombinethem）easily.

ValuedRelations.Ifyoureadinvalueddata,youcansequentially“step”throughdifferentlevelsofdichotomization,effectivelyselectingonlystrongties,onlyweakties,etc.Inaddition,youhavetheoptionoflettingthethicknessoflinescorrespondtostrengthofties.

NodeAttributes.Theprogrammakesitconvenienttoreadinmultiplenodeattributesforuseinsettingcolorsandsizesofnodes（aswellasrims,labels,etc.）.Inaddition,theprogrammakesiteasytoturnonandoffgroupsofnodesdefinedbyavariable,suchasmalesormembersofagivenorganization.IftheattributesarereadinusingtheVNAdataformat（seebelow）,theycanbetextualinadditiontonumeric.Thismeansthatinsteadofcodinglocationasnumericcodes1,2,3,etc,youcansimplywriteBoston,NewYork,Tokyo…

2-ModeData.NetDrawcanread2-modedata,suchastheDavis,GardnerandGardnerdataandautomaticallycreateabipartiterepresentationofit.

DataFormats.TheprogramreadsUcinetdatasets（the##hand##dfiles）,UcinetDLtextfiles,Pajekfiles（net,cluandvec）,andtheprogram’sownVNAtextfileformat,whichallowstheusertocombinenodeattributeswithtieinformation.

SavingData.UsingtheVNAfileformat,theprogramcansaveanetworkalongwithitsspatialconfiguration,nodecolors,shapes,etc.sothatthenexttimeyouopenthefile,thenetworklooksexactlylikeitlookedbefore.TheprogramcanalsosavedataasPajeknetandclufiles,andUcinetdatasets（bothnetworksandattributes）.

SavingPictures.Networkdiagramscanbesavedasbitmaps（.bmp）,jpegs（.jpg）,windowsmetafiles（.wmf）andenhancedmetafiles（.emf）.Inaddition,theprogramexportstoPajekandMage.

Printing.ThereisaPrintbutton.Thisisverygoodforcreatingpublication-qualitydiagramsbecausetheresultsutilizethefullresolutionoftheprinter.（Whenyousaveanimagelikeabitmaptodiskandinsertintoadocumentandthenprintthat,theimageresolutionisnobetterthanyourscreen’s.）

AppearanceOptions.Afullrangeofoptionsisimplemented,includingtheabilitytochangesizesandcolorsofnodes,node-rims,labels,linesandbackground.Differentnodeshapesarenotyetimplemented.Youcanalsorotate,flip,shift,resizeandzoomconfigurations.

Layout.Twobasickindsoflayoutsareimplementedatpresent:

acircleandanMDS/springembeddingbasedongeodesicdistance.TheMDSincludesoptionsforexaggeratingclustering,biasingtowardequal-lengthedges,andturningon/offnode-repulsion.

GettingStarted

SupposeyouhaveanetworkcurrentlystoredasaUcinetdataset.Todrawitinnetwork,justpresstheOpenFilebuttononthetoolbarandselectthefile.Therestisautomatic.Hereisanexampleofdrawingafilecalledcampnet:

Usingthiswindowyoucanselectanattribute（IDisselectedbydefault）,andthenusethatclickonandoffnodeswithspecificproperties,suchasfemalesorinstructors.

Nowsupposeyouwanttochangethecolorsofnodestoreflectanodeattribute,suchaswantingtopaintmenblueandwomenred.GotoProperties|Nodes|Colors|ByAttribute.Adialogueboxwillopenwhichletsyouchoosetheattribute（gender）andthenchoosethecolorofeachgender.Thedialogueboxlookslikethis:

Youmightalsowanttochangetheshapeofthenodestoreflecttherolethatpersonplaysinthegroup（asindicatedbytheRolevariable）.Todothis,gotoProperties|Nodes|Shape|byattribute,whichopensadialogueboxverysimilartothecolorbox,exceptinsteadofcolors,thereareshapes.Somethingsimilarcanbedonewiththesizeofnodes.

Aftersettingeachgendertothedesiredcolor,eachroletodesiredshape,andmakingthesizeofthenodesproportionaltotheirbetweennesscentrality,thenetworkdiagramlookslikethis:

TheVNAdataformatallowstheusertostorenotonlynetworkdatabutalsoattributesofthenodes,alongwithinformationabouthowtodisplaythem（color,size,etc.）.AkeyfeatureofVNAattributedataisthattextualdataispermitted.Inotherwords,insteadofusingnumericcodes,thegendervariablecanhavevalueslike“male”and“female”.
