HewasbornonJuly15,1606inLeiden,theNetherlands.Hisfatherwantedhimtohaveareal,learnedprofessionbutRembrandtlefttheUniversityofLeidenafterbeingbored.HebeganstudyingartunderalocalteacherbutsoonleftandstudiedinAmsterdamwherehemasteredallhislessonsinsixmonths!

Attheageof22,hemovedbacktoLeidenandbegantogethisownstudents.OneofhisstudentswasthefamousartistGerritDou.In1631hereturnedtoAmsterdamwherehebecamethemostpopularportraitpainterinHolland.RembrandtmetSaskiaandmarriedherin1634.Shewasacousinofaverysuccessfulartdealerandshehelpedhimtomeetwealthypeoplewhomissioned(委任制作)manypaintingsfromhim.Heusedherasamodelinmanyofhispaintings.

Rembrandt'sprivatelife,however,wasveryunfortunate.HehadfourchildrenwithSaskiabutonlyone,Titus,survived.Saskiadiedin1642attheageofonly30.In1649,hishousekeeperbecamehissecondwifeandwasalsoamodelformanyofhispaintings.EventhoughRembrandtwasverysuccessfulasanartist,artdealerandteacher,helivedinacarelesswayandhadtodeclarebankruptcy(破产)in1656.Heevenhadtosellhiswholeartcollectionandhishousetopayoffhisdebts.
