AnewstudyfindsthattheaverageperformanceofstudentsfromthelowestincomefamiliesintheUSlags(滞后)aboutthreetofouryearsbehindthatofthehighestincomestudents-anachievementgapthathasremainedconstantfordecades.Ananalysisofstandardizedtestsgiventomorethan2.7millionmiddleandhighschoolstudentsover40yearssuggeststhatfederaleducationprogramsaimedatclosingthegaparefallingshort.

Whethertheproblemisworsening,however,isupfordebate.A2011study,conductedbyStanfordeducationsociologistSeanReardon,lookedat12examsadministeredfrom1960to2007,andfoundthatthegapintestscoresbetweenthepoorestandthewealthieststudentsgrewby40percent.Itshowsthepooreststudentslagaboutthreetosixyearsbehindtheirwealthierpeersinlearning.Reardonsuggestedparentsofmeanswereincreasinglyinvestingintheirchildren'seducation,sharpeningthedivide.

Thedifferentresultsbetweenthenewstudyandthatconductedin2011comedowntothefactthattheresearchersanalyzedresultsfromdifferenttestsandhowtheycategorized(分类)familyincomelevel,sayseducationsociologistAnnaChmielewski.HanushekandReardonagreethattheincome-relatedachievementgapisalarming.

Otherresearchhasshownthatpettinganimalslikedogscanreducestresshormonelevelsandanxiety.Around1,000campusesintheUSalreadyusetherapypetsandit’sbecomingmorecommonintheUK.Forexample,TheUniversityofMiddlesexhasemployedsomedogstohelpstoplonelystudentsdroppingout.FionaSuthers,headofclinicalskillsattheuniversity,saysthatfiveLabradorshada“stringentassessment”toensuretheyhadtherighttemperament(性情).Butsheadds,“It’shardtodescribetheimpactofjusthavingadoglyingdowninthecornerofaclass.”
