What'sthedifference:
"Importantly"vs."Important"
Moreormostimportantisprobablywhatyouwant.Onlyifyou’reapompousblowharddoyousaythingsimportantly.
What'sthedifference:
"Their"vs."Hisorher"
Everyone,everybody,andclosecousineacharesingular,sowordsthatrefertothemshouldalsobesingular.Or,sinceweallhaveourgrammarhang-ups,youcouldjustrephrasethesentence.
What'sthedifference:
"I"vs."Me"
BetweenyouandIsoundsfancy,andthereforeright,butdon’tbesoquicktobelittleCookieMonster(“Mewantcookies!
”).Inthiscase,meiscorrectbecauseit’stheobjectoftheprepositionbetween.
What'sthedifference:
"Assessable"vs."Accessible"
Alibraryiswheelchair-accessible.Yourhouseisassessablebythecountythattaxesit.
What'sthedifference:
"Badly"vs."Bad"
Isyoursenseoftouchphysicallyimpaired(almostnever)orareyoufeelingsomeguiltafterscrewingup(almostalways)?
Intheformer,youfeelbadly;thelatter,youfeelbad.
What'sthedifference:
"Equallyas"vs."Equally"
Theasisn’tnecessary.“IspeakLatinandpigLatinequallywell.”
”
What'sthedifference:
"Because"vs."That"
Younevermean"thereasonisbecause";youmean"thereasonisthat."Why?
Thewordreasonimpliesbecause.Likewise,whysay“thereasonwhy”whenyoucansay“thereason”?
What'sthedifference:
"Lay"vs."Lie"
Thisisanothercasewherepeoplethink(wrongly)thataparticularwordsoundsmore“educated.”Layandliearenotinterchangeable.Liedoesn’trequireanobject:
“Ineedtoliedown.”Butlaydoes:
“Ineedtolaymyheaddown.”Confusionkicksinbecauseofthepasttenseofbothverbs—liebecomeslay;laybecomeslaid—buttheusagestaysthesame.
Lie
What'sthedifference:
"Lounge"vs."Longue"
Chaiseloungeisactuallyincorrect,andpeoplehavebeengettingthiswrongforatleastacentury.TheproperphraseisFrenchandtranslatesas“longchair.”
What'sthedifference:
"ATM"vs."ATMmachine"
UsingthephrasesATMmachine(automatedtellermachinemachine)or"PINnumber"(personalidentificationnumbernumber)isredundant.
What'sthedifference:
"Historical"vs."Historic"
Inshort,historicmeans“significant”(“ahistoricelection”).Butifyouintend“occurringinorrelatingtohistory,”gowithhistorical(think“historicaldata”or“ahistoricallinkbetweenthetwoworldwars”).Bytheway,it’snever“anhistoric/historicalevent.”Thevowelsound“a”shouldprecedeaconsonantsound.
顺便说一句,“anhistoric/historicalevent一个历史性/历史事件。
What'sthedifference:
"That"vs."Who"
Ahumanisa“who.”Anythingelse(yes,includinganimals)isa“that.”
人就是“who”。
What'sthedifference:
"Couldof"vs."Couldhave"
Thiserrorpopsupbecauseofthesimilarpronunciations.Butremember,everysentenceneedsaverb:
“Icouldhavewrittenabettercoverletter.”
”
What'sthedifference:
"Mosteveryone"vs."Everyone"
Makeupyourmind:
Ifyoutrulymean“everyperson,”usejusteveryone.Ifnot,saymostpeople.
What'sthedifference:
"Nauseous"vs."Nauseated"
Instrictterms,nauseousmeans“tocausenausea”(asin“ahateful,nauseousperson”);nauseatedmeans“afflictedwithnausea”(asin“I’mnauseated”).
What'sthedifference:
"Veryunique"vs."Unique"
Noneedtosay"veryunique."Uniquethingsandpeopleareoneofakind,absolute.
What'sthedifference:
"Intensivepurposes"vs."Intentsandpurposes"
Therightphrasetosayis"intentsandpurposes,"butevenifyoudogetitright,youdon’tneedthisexpression.It’sjustfiller.
What'sthedifference:
"Literallylaughedmyheadoff"vs."Laughedmyheadoff"
Literallymeans“actually”andisbestreservedforrealevents.
What'sthedifference:
"Mergetogether"vs."Merge"
Thephrase"mergetogether"isredundant(asarecombinationslikeabsolutenecessity,freegift,andapairoftwins—unlessyoumeantwosetsoftwins,thatis).
What'sthedifference:
"Orientate"vs."Orient"
Orientateisaword,butitmeans“tofaceeast.”“Thetourwasdesignedtoorientnewstudents.”
Orientate
What'sthedifference:
"Offof"vs."Off"
Skip"offof."Somewordsareperfectlyfineontheirown.“MayIbounceanideaoffyou?
”
”
What'sthedifference:
"Impact"vs."Affect"
Impactshouldn’tbeforcedintoserviceasaverb.No:
“Thedecisionimpactseveryone.”Yes:
“Thedecisionaffectseveryone.”
Impact
What'sthedifference:
"Inorderto"vs."To"
Skip"Inorderto."Somewordsareperfectlyfineontheirown.
What'sthedifference:
"Comprisedof"vs."Comprises"
Comprisesequalsincludes.You’dneversay,“Mygrocerylistincludesofmilk,eggs,andkiwis.”Samegoesforcomprises.(Useofwithcompose:
“Thesculptureiscomposedofwirehangers.”)
What'sthedifference:
"Preventative"vs."Preventive"
GrammarsovereignH.W.Fowlerbannedthelongform("preventative")almostahundredyearsago.Sosomeonewhoishealthconsciousmightseekpreventivecare;responsiblehomeownersmighttakepreventivemeasurestokeeptheirrooffromleaking.
What'sthedifference:
"Infamous"vs."Famous"
Therichandfamousarewidelyknown(andwealthy).Buttherichandinfamoushaveareputationoftheworstkind.Anotherwaytolookatit:
UnlessAuntDonna’schocolatechipcookiesarenotoriouslyevilanddisgraceful,theyarefamous,notinfamous.
What'sthedifference:
"Evoke"vs."Invoke"
Aphotographevokesemotion;ajokeevokeslaughter—evokemeans“toelicitorcallforth.”Saveinvokeforwhenyoumean“tocallonahigherpower,petitionforsupport,orimplement”(forexample,“AllisoninvokedRobertFrostforherfirstassignment”or“Theprincipalinvokedtheaidoftheteachers”).
What'sthedifference:
"Denounce"vs."Renounce"
Thetwomaysoundsimilar,buttheirmeaningsaredistinct:
Denounceis“tocondemnpubliclyoraccuseformally”(“ThejudgedenouncedtheCEOforinsidertrading”),whilerenouncemeans“togiveuporrefusetofollow”(“TheCEOrenouncedhisnot-guiltyplea”).
What'sthedifference:
"Uninterested"vs."Disinterested"
Carefulspeakerswhowishtoconveyalackofbiaswanttousedisinterested.Speakerswhodon’tcareaboutsuchgrammaticalsubtletiesareuninterested.
想尽量传达无偏见观点的细心的人会用disinterested(无利害关系的、冷漠的)。
不在乎这些语法的人会使用uninterested(不感兴趣的,但也有无利害关系的含义)。
What'sthedifference:
"Myself"vs."I"
MyselfisnotoriouslymisusedforIorme,oftenbecausepeoplearetrying(toohard,itseems)tosoundsmarter(wrong:
Myselfisapronounbestreservedforreflexiveuses(whenanactionisdirectedtowardthesubject:
“ForChristmas,Igavemyselfagift”)orforemphasis(“Imyselfhavedonethatmanytimes”).
What'sthedifference:
"Former"vs."Latter"
Thedifferenceisclear-cut,yetwritersandspeakerssometimesmuffthesetwo:
Simply,formeristhefirstoftwo;latteristhesecond.(Andwhilewe’reatit,formerlyvs.formally:
Theformermeans“atanearliertime,”asin“FormerlythegovernorofCalifornia,Schwarzenegger…”;thelattermeans“byanestablishedformorstructure,”asin“TheschoolisformallycalledtheUniversityofCaliforniaatLosAngeles.”)
