Thirdhandsmokeiswhatonesmellswhenasmokergetsinanelevatoraftergoingoutsideforacigarette,orinahotelroomwherepeoplesmoked.“Yournoseisn'tlying,”hesaid.“Thesmellissobadthatyourbrainistellingyou,‘Getaway.’”

Butfarfewerpeoplerealizedtherisksofthirdhandsmoke.Sincetheexpressionissonew,theresearchersaskedpeopleiftheyagreedwiththestatementthat“breathingairinaroomtodaywherepeoplesmokedyesterdaycanharmthehealthofchildren”.Only65percentofnonsmokersand43percentofsmokersagreedwiththatstatement.

“Thecentralmessagehereisthatsimplyclosingthekitchendoortotakeasmokeisnotprotectingthekidsfromtheeffectsofthatsmoke,”saidanotherdoctor.“Therearesubstancesinthethirdhandsmoke,andtheyareacancerriskforanybodyofanyagewhocomesclosetothem.”
