  OneproblemisthatIdon’tlookanydifferentfromotherpeople.Sosometimessomechildreninmyprimaryschoolwouldlaugh,whenIgotoutofbreathafterrunningashortwayorhadtostopandresthalfwayupthestairs.SometimesIwastooweaktogotoschoolsomyeducationsuffered.EverytimeIreturnedafteranabsence,IfeltstupidbecauseIwasbehindtheothers.

  Mylifeisaloteasierathighschoolbecausemyfellowstudentshave

  acceptedme.Thefewwhocannotseetherealpersoninsidemybodydonotmakemeannoyed,andIjustignorethem.AllinallIhaveagoodlife.IamhappytohavefoundmanythingsIcando,likewritingandcomputerprogramming.MyambitionistoworkforafirmthatdevelopscomputersoftwarewhenIgrowup.LastyearIinventedacomputerfootballgameandabigcompanyhasdecidedtobuyfromme.Ihaveaverybusylifewithnotimetositaroundfeelingsorryformyself.Aswellasgoingtomoviesandfootballmatcheswithmyfriends,Ispendalotoftimewithmypets.Ihavetworabbits,aparrot,atankfulloffishandatortoise.TolookaftermypetsproperlytakesalotoftimebutIfinditworthwhile.Ialsohavetodoalotofwork,especiallyifIhavebeenawayforawhile.

  Inmanywaysmydisabilityhashelpedmegrowstrongerpsychologicallyandbecomemoreindependent.Ihavetoworkhardtoliveanormallifebutithasbeenworthit.IfIhadachancetosayonethingtohealthychildren,itwouldbethis:

havingadisabilitydoesnotmeanyourlifeisnotsatisfying.Sodon’tfeelsorryforthedisabledormakefunofthem,anddon’tignorethemeither.Justacceptthemforwhotheyare,andgivethemencouragementtoliveasrichandfullalifeasyoudo.

  Oneday,Clairementionedthatshedidn’tthinkshewasclever.Tonysaidthatshemustfeelveryunhappytosaythat.Clairethoughtitwasridiculoustobeofferedsympathybyarobot.Butshebegantotrusthim.Shetoldhimhowshewasoverweightandthismadeherfeelunhappy.Alsoshefeltherhomewasn’telegantenoughforsomeonelikeLarrywhowantedtoimprovehissocialposition.Shewasn’tlikeGladysClaffern,oneoftherichestandmostpowerfulwomenaround.

  AsafavorTonypromisedtohelpClairemakeherselfsmarterandherhomemoreelegant.SoClaiseborrowedapileofbooksfromthelibraryforhimtoread,orrather,scan.Shelookedathisfingerswithwonderastheyturnedeachpageandsuddenlyreachedforhishand.Shewasamazedbyhisfingernailsandthesoftnessandwarmthofhisskin.Howabsurd,shethought.Hewasjustamachine.

  TonygaveClaireanewhaircutandchangedthemakeupshewore.Ashewasnotallowedtoaccompanyhertotheshops,hewroteoutalistofitemsforher.Clairewentintothecityandboughtcurtains,cushions,acarpetandbeddi
