WilliamWordsworthwasamajorEnglishRomanticpoetwho，withSamuelTaylorColeridge，helpedtolaunchtheRomanticAgeinEnglishliterature.
Wordsworth，bornintheLakeDistrict，wasthesonofalawyer.HewenttoschoolfirstatPenrithandthenatHawksheadGrammarSchoolbeforestudying，from1787，atStJohn'sCollege，Cambridge—alloftheperiodswerelatertobedescribedinThePrelude.In1790hewentwithfriendsonawalkingtourtoFrance，theAlpsandItaly，beforearrivinginFrancewhereWordsworthwastospendthenextyear.
WhileinFrancehefellinlovetwiceover：
oncewithayoungFrenchwoman，AnnetteVallon，whoborehimadaughter，andthen，oncemore，withtheFrenchRevolution.ReturningtoEnglandhewrote，andleftunpublished，hisLettertotheBishopofLlandaff—ashortpieceofwritinginsupportoftheFrenchRevolutionarycause.In1795，afterreceivingalegacy，WordsworthlivedwithhissisterDorothyfirstinDorsetandthenatAlfoxden，Somerset，closetoColeridge.
IntheseyearshewrotemanyofhisgreatestpoemsandalsotravelledwithColeridgeandDorothy，inthewinterof1798 1799，toGermany.TwoyearslaterthesecondeditionofLyricalBalladsappearedin1801，justoneyearbeforeWordsworthmarriedMaryHutchinson.Thiswasfollowed，in1807，bythepublicationofPoemsinTwoVolumes，whichincludedthepoemsResolutionandIndependenceandIntimationsofImmortalityfromRecollectionsofEarlyChildhood.
DuringthisperiodhealsomadenewfriendshipswithWalterScott，SirG．H.BeaumontandDeQuincy，wrotesuchpoemsasElegaicStanzas（1807），andfatheredfivechildren.Hereceivedacivillistpensionin1842andwasmadepoet laureatejustoneyearlater.
TodayWordsworth'spoetryremainswidelyread.ItsuniversalappealisperhapsbestexplainedbyWordsworth'sownwordsontherole，forhim，ofpoetry;whathecalled“themostphilosophicalofallwriting”whoseobjectis“truthcarriedaliveintotheheartbypassion”.
