Theauthor---ArthurMiller（1915-2005）

ArthurMillerwasborninamiddle-classJewishfamily（中产阶级犹太家族）inNewYorkcity.Hisfatherwasaclothingmanufacturer,butinthegreatdepression（大萧条时期）,hissuccessfulindustrywasruinedandhedidn'thavethemoneyforArthurMillerincollege.Millerhadtoworkinawarehousetoearnthemoneyforcollege.

In1938,hereceivedabachelor'sdegree.

In1940MillermarriedaCatholicgirl,MarySlattery,hiscollegesweetheart,withwhomhehadtwochildren.

In1956,Miller,themanmarriedMarilynMonroe.MarilynMonroe（玛丽莲梦露）wasoneofthe20thcentury’smostfamousfilmactressinAmerica.AndshemetwithArthurMillerin1951.Theymarriedin1956.ItwasMiller’ssecondmarriage,anditwasMonroe’sthirdmarriage.Unfortunately,theirmarriagehadonlymaintainforfiveyears,andtheydivorcedin1961.

In1962,ArthurmillermarriedanAustralianPhotographer.

OnFebruary10,2005,Millerdiedofheartfailureathomewhenhewas89.

ArthurMillerwoncountlessprizesinhiswholelife,including1949Pulitzerprize（普利策戏剧奖）,twoNewYorktheatrecriticsawards（纽约戏剧评论奖）,OlivierAwardforbestdrama.

In1953,thecoldwarreacheditsclimax,millerwrotehismostfamousdrama“TheCrucible”（炼狱）.HispurposeonwritingthisplayisinresponsetoMcCarthysenatorforso-calledcommunistpartysympathizersrepression.

ArthurMillerhasalmostdevotedhimselfinwriting,hisrepresentativeworksare《我的儿子们》（Allmysons,1947）、《推销员之死》（Deathofasalesman,1949）、《炼狱》（TheCrucible,1953）、《桥头眺望》（AViewfromtheBridge,1955）《维系事件》（IncidentatVichy,1964）、《代价》（Theprice,1968）、《美国大钟》（TheAmericanClock,1980））,etc.Eveninthe80yearsold,heisalsotheauthoroftheMonroealludetowork"thecompletepicture”.

“DeathofaSalesman”wasadramaaboutasalesman，whowasaddictedtocapitalism.Whenhewasold,hisbossfiredhimandhefeltdisillusioned.Togetahugeinsurance,hedroveoutatnightanddiedinatrafficaccident.

In1978ArthurmillerandhiswifecametovisitChina.ItwasCaoYu（曹禺）whoreceivedthem.In1983,“DeathofaSalesman”begantobeperformedinChina,andtheperformancewasverysuccessful.ThisdramawasthefirstforeigndramaperformedinChinaafterthe“CulturalRevolution”（文化大革命）.Italmostbecameoneofthemostimportantevents,whichhelpstosoftentheossified（僵化的）relationshipbetweenChinaandAmericainthehistory.
