Weenvisionedthetripasapreludetomoreexoticones，perhapstoNewDelhiorBangkoklaterthisyear，butthoughtour11-and13-year-oldsneededafirststepawayfrommanicuredboulevardsandpristinemonuments.

Whatwedidn’tforeseewasthereactionoffriends，whowarnedthatwewereputtingourchildren“indanger，”referringvaguely，andmostincorrectly，todisease，terrorismorjusttheunknown.TohelpusgetacquaintedwiththepeculiaritiesofIstanbulandtogiveourchildrenachancetochoosewhattheywereparticularlyinterestedinseeing，weboughtanexcellentguidebookandreaditthoroughlybeforeleaving.
