1Scope

ThepresentdocumentisanintroductiontothespeechprocessingpartsofthenarrowbandtelephonyspeechserviceemployingtheAdaptiveMulti-Rate(AMR)speechcoder.Ageneraloverviewofthespeechprocessingfunctionsisgiven,withreferencetothedocumentswhereeachfunctionisspecifiedindetail.

TheAMRspeechcoderconsistsofthemulti-ratespeechcoder,asourcecontrolledrateschemeincludingavoiceactivitydetectorandacomfortnoisegenerationsystem,andanerrorconcealmentmechansimtocombattheeffectsoftransmissionerrorsandlostpackets.

Themulti-ratespeechcoderisasingleintegratedspeechcodecwitheightsourceratesfrom4.75kbit/sto12.2kbit/s,andalowratebackgroundnoiseencodingmode.Thespeechcoderiscapableofswitchingitsbit-rateevery20msspeechframeuponcommand.

AreferenceconfigurationwherethevariousspeechprocessingfunctionsareidentifiedisgiveninFigure1.Inthisfigure,therelevantspecificationsforeachfunctionarealsoindicated.

InFigure1,theaudiopartsincludinganaloguetodigitalanddigitaltoanalogueconversionareincluded,toshowthecompletespeechpathbetweentheaudioinput/outputintheUserEquipment(UE)andthedigitalinterfaceofthenetwork.Thedetailedspecificationoftheaudiopartsisnotwithinthescopeofthepresentdocument.Theseaspectsareonlyconsideredtotheextentthattheperformanceoftheaudiopartsaffecttheperformanceofthespeechtranscoder.

5AdaptiveMulti-Ratespeechcodectranscodingfunctions

Theadaptivemulti-ratespeechcodecisdescribedin[2].Thetechnicalcontentisidenticaltothatof3GPPTS26.090.

AsshowninFigure1,thespeechencodertakesitsinputasa13bituniformPulseCodeModulated(PCM)signaleitherfromtheaudiopartoftheUEoronthenetworkside,fromthePublicSwitchedTelephoneNetwork(PSTN)viaan8-bitA-laworμ-lawto13-bituniformPCMconversion.Theencodedspeechattheoutputofthespeechencoderispacketizedanddeliveredtothenetworkinterface.Inthereceivedirection,theinverseoperationstakeplace.

Thedetailedmappingbetweeninputblocksof160speechsamplesin13bituniformPCMformattoencodedblocks(inwhichthenumberofbitsdependsonthepresentlyusedcodecmode)andfromthesetooutputblocksof160reconstructedspeechsamplesisdescribedin[2].ThecodingschemeisMulti-RateAlgebraicCodeExcitedLinearPrediction.Thebit-ratesofthesourcecodecarelistedinTable1.
