Abstract:
ThepresentstudypresentsadetailedreportofaprojectimplementedtosolvetheproblemthatmostofmystudentsdonotlikedoingthewaitingpracticeIassignthemtodoafterclass.Itishypothesizedthatlearners’interestinwritingafterclasswillbegreatlyincreasedbyabetterorganizationinthisrespect.Thishypothesisisverifiedbyafour-weekpracticeofwell-organizedwritingworkactivities.
Methodologicallyfourmethodsareusedandtheyareanalyticmethodcauseanalysisquestionnairesurveyandbrainstormingactivation.

Withtherapiddevelopmentofourcountry,especiallywithofingofthe20XXOlympicGameinBeijing,EnglishhasbeemoreandmoreimportantinChina.Itisoneofthemainsubjectsinmiddleschools.TheaimofEnglishteachingistodevelopstudents’municationskillsoflistening,speaking,readingandwriting.However,inEnglishteaching,writinginEnglishisnotpaidmuchattentiontoinmiddleschools,especiallyinruralmiddleschools.
Inthispaper,Iwouldliketodiscusstheroleofwriting,thestudents’problemsandthewaysIusetosolvetheseproblems.
Ⅰ.Theroleofwriting
Althoughwehaveleftthediscussionofthewritingtilllast,thisshouldnotbetakentomeanthatwritingislessimportantthantheotherskills.Inreality,theabilitytowriteisrecognizedinsocietyandintheschoolsasoneofthemostimportantobjectivesoflanguagestudy.
Writingisuniversallyrecognizedashavingadualrole:
ontheotherhand,itservesasanimportantmeanstomunicate,asoneofthetwoproductiveskills;ontheotherhand,itservestocoordinatethelearningofotherlanguageskillsinlanguageteachingandlearning.AlthoughmostChinesestudentswillhaveaslittlechancetowritetoanEnglishreaderastheyhavetotalktoanEnglishspeaker,theyshouldbepreparetodosoincaseasituationarisesinwhichthereisaneedtomunicateinwrittenEnglish.
Theroleofwritingtoreinforceotherlanguageskillsisimportantformanyreasons:
First,studentsaremoreimpressedbyexercisethatarewrittenandhandedinthanbythosethatarepracticedorallyonly.Beginningstudentswhoareassignednowrittenworkbutonlyoralworkoftengetthewrongimpressionthatthereisnohomeworkatallthatday.Evenseniorhighstudentstendtotreatoralassignmentswithlessrespectthanwrittenones.Forstudentswhoarenothighlymotivated,theonlysuccessfulwaytomakethemopentheirEnglishbooksoutsidetheclassistoassignwrittenworkforthenextday.Secondly,writinghelpstoconsolidatethestudents’graspofvocabularyandstructure,andplementstheotherlanguageskills.Theactofwritingdownwordsorphrasesorsentenceshelpstoreinforcethelearningintheclassroom.Bycheckingtheirwrittenexercises,teacherscanevaluatethestudents’progressinlearninganddeterminedtheirtrueprehensionofthestructuresbeinglearned,thusgainingaclearerviewofwhattheyhavemasteredandwhattheyhavenot.Thirdly,somewritingactivitiesinclassmayserveasawelechangeforthestudentswhohavebeenreadingaloud,drilling,recitingformorethanhalfanhour.Afterafewminutesofwritingtheywillbereadyagainforsomeotheroralactivities.Fourthlyandlastly,writtenworkisoftentakenseriouslybyChinesestudentsforthesimplereasonthatalmostallexaminationsandtestsaredesignedinwrittenform,exceptforthosewhohopetomajorinEnglishatcollege,theymustgothroughoralexaminations.Tomanystudents,writtenworkseemstobetheonlyformofassessmentofEnglishlearning.
1. Writingservesasanimportantmeansinlanguagelearning
Writingisonewayofprovidingvarietyinclassroomprocedures,anditalsomakesindividualizedworkpossibleinlargeclasses.Writinghelpsstudentslearnthesubjectmatter:
