Asweknow,collegestudentrequireuniquequalitiestobesuccessful.Nowherearesomeidealqualitiesofsuccessfulcollegestudennts.

Inmyopinion,timemanagementisthemostimportantquality.Manystudentsfindthatthecollegecourserequiresthemalotoftime,commitmentanddisciplinetokeepupwiththeflowofthecourse.Sotheyshouldmanagetheirtimereasonablyandbeawareofthattheyhavespecifictimescommittedtoattendingandpreparingforeachcourse.Inaddition,studentsshouldfeelhealthy,getadequatesleepandmaketimeforexercise.

Furthermore,theyoughttotaketheprogramseriously.Theyshouldkeepupwiththeprogressofthecourse.Theyneedtoattendallclassesandhaveregularstudytimesandberesponsiblefortheirsuccessorfailure.

Peoplewhohavethequalitiesaboveusuallymakeverysucessfulcollegestudent.Ifyouhavethesequalities,collegelearningmaybeoneofthebestdiscoveriesyouwillevermake.

ThisTIMEMANAGEMENTPROGRAMissuccessfulwhenyouapproachitwithapositiveattitudeoforganization,notregimentation,foryourmostpreciousresource:

yourtime.Goalsofthisprogramhaveaprioritylistthatisveryimportanttoyouracceptingthisasabetterwaytoliveandlearn:

 

Knowingyouhavespecifictimescommittedtoattending,andpreparingfor,eachcourse. 

Knowingyouhavesometimeforyourselfandsignificantothers. 

Knowingthatyouarekeepinguptothebestofyourability. 

Knowingthatyouhave"controlled"distractions. 

Feelinghealthy,gettingadequatesleep,andmakingtimeforexercise.

Acknowledgingtheseprioritiesallowsyoutoexperienceproductivestudytimethatleadstoanenjoyableeducationalexperience.Effectivetimemanagementprogramsrequireyoutoestablishprioritiesthatwillhelpyouaccomplishyourgoals.  

 

YOURFIRSTPRIORITYSHOULDBETHATOFATTENDINGSCHEDULEDLECTURESANDLABS.  

Yoursecondpriority,intermsofblocksoftimetoattendto,iswhatIcall"ME"or"WE"time.Thisincludestimeforexercise(swimming,running,organizedsports),relaxation(readingforpleasure,knitting,movies,televisionorjustloafingaround!

),volunteeringinthecommunity,orfamilyactivities.Itcomesasasurprisetomanystudentsthatthistimeissecondontheprioritylist,butIpersonallyfeelthatit'sacriticaltimecommitmentthatyoumustmake.Overtheyears,I'veobservedthatprofessionalstudentsexperiencingacademicdifficultieshave,forthemostpart,givenupestablishedtimecommitmentstothemselves.Thishasadevastatingeffectontheirframeofmind.Whenthe"ME"or"WE"timeisconsumedbystudyinganyfunyoumighthaveinyourcollegeexperiencecanquicklybelostandyouendupmadatthecollege,faculty,family,andfriends.Youmayevenquitinteractingwithyourownpets!

 

Thequestionyouneedtoaskandansweristwo-fold:

whatdoIwantfor"ME/WE"timeandhowmuchofitdoIfeelIneed?

Ifyou'vegotasignificantother,sitdowntogetherandworkoutthispartofyourscheduleearlyintheterm.Asthesemestercontinues,yourcommitmentto"ME"or"WE"timemayhavetobeadjusted.Myrecommendationisthatyoublockoutallthetimeyoufeelisnecessaryforyoutocontinuetodowhatyouliketodoandwhichyourfeelmaintainsyoursteadystateofmentalandphysicalhealth. 

Itmaybethatasyoucompletethetimeschedule,you'llhavetobackoffonsomecommitmentto"ME"time,butyou'llhavedonethisbaseduponwhatyourealizeisanimportantprioritysystem,andeachsemesterwillbedifferent.Ultimately,youmustfeelgoodaboutwhatyou'redoing,andhavingscheduledtimetoperformwellinyourclasseswillgiveyouthepeaceofmindthatmakesitallpossibleandstillbefun.Ifyouarenothavinganyfun,itmaynotbeworthdoingit.  

Hereareafewdocumentedfactsyoushouldconsiderwhenmakingyourtimecommitments:

 

Researchindicatesaverageadultsneed7hrsofsleeptofunctionoptimally.Onesuggestionistoestablishaschedulethatputsthe7-hourblockintothemostcompatiblepositionwithadailyschedulethatstartsat7a.m.Thismeansgoingtobedat12midnightatthelatest.Ifyoufindyourselfrequiringmuchmorethanthe7hours,youmaybedealingwithsomelevelofpsychologicaldepressionandshouldconsidercounseling.Ifashortnapafteryourlastclassisneeded,blockoutamaximumof30to60minutes.Eventuallyworktowardputtingastudysessionintothattimeblockandseeifthatyieldsgreaterrewardsintheclassroom.

34hourstogiveprioritytimetoworkand/ormorestudy.Forsomeofyou,onehourofstudyperclassperdaymaynotbeenough,soyou'llneedtocommitmoretimetostudyblocks.

Thepointofthisexerciseisthattherereallyistimetodomosteverythingthatyoudecideyouwanttodowell!

Effectivestudytimeforagivensubjectdeterioratesafter50to60minutesofconcentration.Youcanenhance"effectivestudytime"bytakingshortbreaksof5to10minutesandchangingthesubjectmatteryou'rereviewing. 

Themosteffectivestudyingisaccomplishedwithoutcompetingsensoryinputsuchasthestereo,radio,television,orevenhavingyourpetonyourlap.(Makeadequatetimeforthethesealternativesensoryinputsduringyour"ME"time). 

Optimallyyoushouldstudyeachcoursethesamedayasthelectureorlab,butatleastbeforethenextlecture/labmeeting.A60-minutestudyblockforeachlecturemaynotbeenoughforthatonehourofinformation,whichmeansthatyou'llneedtoschedulesomeadditionaltimeforthatcourse.Eachweekendduringthesemesteryoushouldblockstudytimeforthenextweekandmakeanynecessarychangesforthosecoursesthatrequiremoretime.Donotmodifyyourweekdaystudyscheduleduringtheweek,butusetheweekendtoscheduleyourstudyblockstogetyouwellpreparedfornextweek.
