摘要

简·奥斯丁是英国18世纪末创作女性主题小说的妇女作家之一,其代表作《傲慢与偏见》讲述几对青年婚恋嫁娶的故事,深刻揭示金钱与婚姻的关系。

莉迪亚和威克姆,夏洛特和柯林斯的婚姻完全受金钱的左右;伊丽莎白和达西,简和宾利的婚姻虽然掺杂了金钱的因素,但是建立在牢固的感情基础上。

几桩不同性质的婚姻体现了奥斯丁的婚姻观:

为了财产、金钱和地位结婚是错误的,而结婚不考虑经济因素也是愚蠢的;爱情是婚姻的基石,金钱只是辅助因素。

Abstract

JaneAustenwasoneoftheBritishwomenwritersinthelate18thcenturywhoweremainlyconcernedwithwomen’slivingconditions.HermasterpieceisPrideandPrejudice.Thispaperexaminestherelationshipbetweenmoneyandmarriagebyanalyzingfourcouples’loveandmarriageinthisnovel.TheunhappymarriagesbetweenLydiaandWickhamb,CharlotteandCollinsarecompletelysubjecttomoney;However,ElizabethandDarcy,JaneandBingleybasetheirhappyunionsmainlyonlovewithmoneyassecondary.AllthesemaritalunionssuggestAusten’smarriagevalueasfollows:

trueloveservesasthefoundationstoneofhappymarriage,andmoney,tosomedegree,playsaninseparablepartinbringinghappinesstomarriage.

1.Introduction

JaneAusten(1775-1717)createdsixnovelsduringherlifetime---SenseandSensibility,PrideandPrejudice,NorthangerAbbey,Manshifeierdemanor,Emma,Persuasion,“alldescribemorethanmarriage”(WangShouren,2005:

64).HermasterpiecePrideandPrejudice(1813)isreadwidelyallovertheworld.Fromitsfirstpublicationtothepresent,therearemanystudiesaboutJaneAustenandhermajorworks.In1826,SirWalterScottanalyzedPrideandPrejudicefromanoverallperspective.InhisarticleTheJournalofSirWalterScott,hesummarizedthefeaturesofJaneAustenthat“JaneAustenhasatalentfordescribingtheinvolvementsandfeelingsandcharactersofordinarylifewhichistomethemostwonderfulthatIevermetwith”(出处).AChinesescholarHuangRongpublishedapapercalledThoughtofMarriageinJaneAusten’Prideandprejudice.ThepaperagreedthatintheopeningsentenceofPrideandPrejudice,therearetwoimportantwords“fortune”and“want”.“Fortune”isthebasisofmarriage,while“want”providesthemarriagechanceforthoseunmarriedwomen(出处).Later,XinShulanraisedanarticlefromatotallynewperspectiveonwoman’ssituationinJaneAusten’sage.Theauthorsaid“awomanwhodidnotmarrycouldgenerallyonlylookforwardtolivingwithherrelativesasa“dependant”sothatmarriageisprettymuchtheonlywayofevergettingoutfromundertheparentalroof—unless,ofcourse,herfamilycouldnotsupporther,inwhichcaseshecouldfacetheunpleasantnecessityofgoingtolivewithemployersasadependantgovernessorteacher,orhiredlady’scompanion.”Therefore,herworksstandthetestoftime.Thispaperattemptstoexploretherelationshipbetweenmoneyandmarriagebyanalyzingthefourmarriagesdescribedinthenovel.

2.Moneyandmarriagereflectedinthenovel.

Loveisanancientandnewtopic.Peoplewhoarewillingtousethemostbeautifullanguagetodescribeloveeternalandenduringthinklovecangivepeoplespiritualmotivation,emotional,lifeenrichment,withoutlovelifeispale,depressed,andevenmeaningless.Moneyandmarriagearetwoimportantandclosely-connectedthemesinJaneAusten’sPrideandPrejudice.AccordingtoJaneAusten,loveismorethanmoneyinmarriage,butmoneyisalsoanimportantissue.Asindicatedinthefirstlineofthebookitisatruthuniversallyacknowledgedthatasinglemaninpossessionofagoodfortunemustbeinwantofawife.Sothepropertimeformentosettleisaftertheygetenoughmoney.Becausemiddle-classwomenusuallydon’tgoouttoworkanddependontheirhusbandsfinally,theyaremoreconcernedwithmoneyduringcourtship.Thefourmarriagesinthisnovelwillbeobservedinthefollowingpartindetail.

2.1Twofailuremarriages

2.1.1LydiaandWickham—marriagewithoutmoneyandlove

InPrideandPrejudice,LydiaandWickham’smarriageisridiculousandnotsogood,it’snodoubtthatthereisnoreallovebetweenthem,theirloveisjust“theloveofbody”.JaneAustenholdsacriticalattitudeontheirmarriage.Atfirst,Wickhamwaswell-treatedbythefamilyandthefriends.However,hecamedownintheworldbecauseofhismisbehavior.Hegotintodebt.Asamanwithoutanyresponsibility,hewantedtogetmarriedinordertobecomerichandchangehissocialstatus.Inhisopinion,lovewasonlyrecreaction.Forthispurpose,heenticedyoung,innocent,andvaingloriousLydia,whohatedtoworkhard,andwasspoiltbyhermother.Gettingloveandpraiseofaboywasherdream,soWickhamgotherloveeasily.WhenWickhamwantstoreachhisaim--gettingwealthbyloveandexaltsherbeautyhypocritically,sheforgetswhosheisandfeelssheisthemostbeautifulandhappiestgirlintheworld(FuJun,2002:

43).Herfeelingsalwayskeptfluctuating,wavering.Theirlovedidnotgetthepermissionfromtheparents,andthentheyeloped.Intellectual,emotionalandmoralarethoughttobethemostimportantpartofmarriage.Sowecansaythisisakindofloveandmarriagewithouttrueloveandresponsibility.Suchacoupleonlywantsthepresenthappinessbutnoteverlastingandunchanging.Ofcourse,suchkindofmarriageisdoomedtobeatragedy.

WickhamselectedLydia,moneyplayedanimportantrole.Wickhamwasarealplayboy,beforeelopingwithLydia,hehadwooedMiss.Darcyforthemoney.Wickham’attitudewasrelatedwiththecultureofthesocietyatthattime.Inthe18thcenturytheupper-middle-classsocietystillfocusedonthewealthwhentheymated.WhileWickhamwasasubtlelowermiddleclass,withoutalotofpropertycouldbeinherited,andthushehadastrongdesireformoney.AndWickhamwasarealrascal,hewasspoilingforamarriagetogetrich.Togetoutofthisshamefulsituation,theBennettsthoughtWickhammustgetmarriedwithLydia.However,itwasnotWickham’swillfrombeginningtotheend.HepromisedtomarryherinadditionthatDarcywouldpayoffhisdebts.HealsoaskedDarcytofindhimajobinthearmy.Andwhenhewasindebt,Mr.DarcyhadrepaidthedebtinLydia'sname,gavehimonethousandpounds,andboughthimanoffice,onlyforWickhamandLydia'smarriage.Soitwasamarriagethatmadeformoneyagain.Theunionofthiscoupleindicatesthatmarriagewithoutloveandmoneymustbetragicbecause“hisaffectionforhersoonsunkintoindifference;Her’slastedalittlelonger.”(p.465)

2.1.2CharlotteandCollins—withmoneybutnolove

In“prideandprejudice”,money,loveandmarriageareoftenfollowinglikeashadow.ThemosttypicalexampleistheunionofPastorCollinsandCharlotte.APompous,generallyidioticclergymanwhostoodtoinheritBennetproperty.Collins’sownsocialstatuswasnothingtobragabout,buthetookgreatpainstoleteveryoneandanyoneknowthatLadyCatherinedeBourghservedashispatroness.Hewastheworstcombinationofsnobbishandobsequious.Collinswassnobbishbyassociation.Hewasamanwhobelievedwh
