Iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofschool.

Andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,ofstartingmiddleorhighschool,it'syoufirstdayinanewschool.

Soit'sunderstandableifyou'realittlenervous.

Iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnowwithjustonemoreyeartogo.

Andnomatterwhatgradeyouarein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummerandyoucould'vestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.

IknowthatIwasyoung,myfamilylivedlivedinIndonesiaforafewmymother,shedidn'thavethemoneytosendmewhereallAmericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithanAmericanshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughFriday.

Butbecauseshehadtogotoworktheonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:

30inthemorning.

NowasyoumightimagineIwasn'ttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly.

AndalotoftimesI'dfallasleeprightthereinthekitchenwheneverI'dcomplain,mymotherwouldjustgivemeoneofthoselooksandshe'dsay"Thisisnopicnicformeeither,buster".

SoIknowthatsomeofyouarestilladjustingtobeingbackatI'mheretodaybecauseIhavesomethingimportanttodiscusswithyou.I'mherebecauseIwanttotalkwithyouaboutyoureducationandwhat'sexpectedofallofyouinthisnewschoolyear.

I'vegivenalotofspeechesaboutI'vetalkedaboutresponsibilityalot.I'vetalkedaboutteacher'sresponsibilityforinspiringstudentsandpushingyoutolearn.

I'vetalkedaboutyourparents'responsibilityformakingsureyoustayontrackandyougetyourhomeworkdoneanddon'tspendeverywakinghourinfrontoftheTVorwiththeXbox.

I'vetalkedalotaboutyourgovernment'sresponsibilityforsettinghighstandardsandsupportingteachersandprinciplesandturningaroundschoolsthataren'tworkingwherestudentsaren'tgettingtheopportunitiesthattheydeserve.

Butattheendofthedaywecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworldandnoneofitwillmakeadifferenceandnoneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupayattentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.

That'swhatIwanttofocusontoday,theresponsibilityeachofyouhasfroyoureducation.

Iwantstartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.

Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyou'regoodsingleoneofyouhassomethingtoyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.That'stheopportunityaneducationcanprovide.

Maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter,maybeevengoodenoughtowriteabookorarticlesinanewspaper,butyoumightnotknowituntilyouwritethatEnglishclasspaperthat'sassignedtoyoucouldbeaninnovatororaninventor,maybegoodenoughtocomeupwiththenextiphoneorthenewmedicineorvaccine,butyoumightnotknowituntilyoudoyourprojectforyourscienceyoucouldbeamayororasenatororaSupremeCourtjustice,butyoumightnotknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebateteam.

Andnomatterwhatyouwanttodowithyourlife,Iguaranteethatyou'llneedaneducationtodoit.

Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceofficer?

Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemberofourmilitary?

Youaregoingtoneedagoodeducationforeverysingleoneofthosecannotdropoutofschoolandjustdropinagoodjob.You'vegottotrainforitandworkforitandlearnforit.

Andthisisn'tjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthisfutureofAmericadependsonyou'relearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.

You'llneedtheknowledgeandproblemsolvingskillsyoulearninscienceandmathtocurediseaseslikecancerandAIDSandtodevelopnewenergytechnologiesandprotectourneedtheinsightsandcritical-thinkingskillsyougaininhistoryandsocialstudiestofightpovertyandhomelessness,crimeanddiscrimination,andmakeournationmorefairandmorefree.You'llneedthecreativityandingenuityyoudevelopinallyourclassestobuiltnewcompaniesthatwillcreatenewjobsandboostoureconomy.

Weneedeverysingleoneofyoutodevelopyourtalentsandyourskillsandyourintellectsoyoucanhelpusoldfolkssolveourmostdifficultproblems.

Ifyoudon'tdothat,ifyouquitonschool,you'renotjustquittingonyourself,you'requittingonyourcountry.

Iknowit'snotalwayseasytodowellinschool.

Iknowalotofyouhavechallengesinyourlivesrightnowthatcanmakeithardtofocusonyourschoolwork.

IgetitandIknowwhatit'slike.

MyfatherleftmyfamilywhenIwastwoyearsold,andIwasraisedbyasinglemomwhohadtoworkandwhostruggledattimestopaythebillsandwasn'talwaysabletogiveusthethingsthatotherkidshad.

ThereweretimeswhenImissedhavingafatherinmyweretimeswhenIwaslonelyandIfeltlikeIdidn'tfitin.

SoIwasn'talwaysasfocusedasIshouldhavebeenonschoolandI'vedidsomethingsthatI'mnotproudofandIgotinmoretroublethatIshouldmylifecouldhaveeasilytakenaturnfortheworse.

ButIwasgotalotofsecondchancesandIhadtheopportunitytogotocollegeandlawschoolandfollowmydreams.

Mywife,thefirstlady,MichelleObama,shehasasimilarofherparentshadgonetocollegeandtheydidn'thavealotoftheyworkedhardandsheworkedhardsothatshecouldgotothebestschoolsinthiscountry.

Someofyoumightnothavethoseyoudon'thaveadultsinyourlifewhogiveyouthesupportthatyousomeoneofyourfamilyhaslosttheirjobandthere'snotenoughmoneytogoyouliveinaneighborhoodwhereyoudon'tfeelsafeorhavefriendswhoarepressuringyoutodothingsyouknowaren'tright.

Butattheendoftheday,thecircumstancesofyourlife,whatyoulooklike,whereyoucomefrom,howmuchmoneyyouhave,whatyou'vegotgoingonathome,noneofthatisanexcuseforneglectingyourhomeworkorhavingabadattitudeinschool.That'snoexcusefortalkingbacktoyourteacherorcuttingclass,ordroppingoutofisnoexcusefornottrying.

Whereyouarerightnowdoesn'thavetodeterminewhereyou'llendone'swrittenyourdestinyforyoubecausehereinAmerica,youwriteyourownmakeyourownfuture.That'swhatyoungpeoplelikeyoudoingeveryday,allacrossAmerica.

YoungpeoplelikeJazminPeres,fromRoma,didn'tspeakEnglishwhenshefirststartedofherparentshadgonetosheworkedhard,earnedgoodgradesandgotascholarshiptoBrownUniversity,nowisingraduateschoolstudyingpublichealthonherwaytobecomingPerez.

I'mthinkingaboutAndoniLosAltos,Californiawho'sfoughtbraincancersincehewasthree.He'shadtoendureallsortsoftreatmentsandsurgeriesoneofwhichaffectedhismemorysoittookhimmuchlonger-hundredsofextrahours-todohisheneverfellbehind.He'sheadedtocollegethisfall.

Andthere'sShantellSteve,frommyhometownofChicagowhenbouncingfromfosterhometofosterhomeinthetoughestneighborhoodsinthecity,shemanagedtogetajobatalocalhealthcarecenter,startaprogramtokeepyoungpeopleoutofgangsandshe'sontracktograduatehighschoolwithhonorsandtotocollege.

AndJazmin,Andoni,andShantellaren'tanydifferentfromanyoffacechallengesintheirlivesjustlikeyousomecasesthey'vegotitalotworseoffthanmanyoftheyrefusedtogivechosetotakeresponsibilityfortheirlives,fortheireducationandsetgoalsforIexpectallofyoutodothesame.

That'swhytodayI'mcallingoneachofyoutosetyourowngoalsforyoureducationanddoeverythingyoucantomeetgoalcanbesomethingassimpleasdoingallyourhomework,payingattentioninclass,orspendingsometimeeachdayreadingayou'lldecidetogetinvolvedinanextracurricularactivityorvolunteerinyouryou'lldecidetostandupforkidswhoarebeingteasedorbulliedbecauseofwhotheyareorhowtheylook,becauseyoubelieve,likeIdo,thatallyoungpeopledeserveasafeenvironmenttostudyandyou'lldecidetotakebettercareofyourselfsoyoucouldbemorereadytoalongthoselines,bytheway,Ihopeallofyouarewashingyourhandsalotandthatyoustayhomefromschoolwhenyoudon'tfeelwellsowecankeeppeoplefromgettingthefluthisfallandwinter.

Butwhateveryouresolvetodo,Iwantyoutocommittowantyoutoreallyworkatit.

IknowthatsometimesyougetthatsensefromTVthatyoucanberichandsuccessfulwithoutanyhardworkthatyourtickettosuccessisthroughrappingorbasketballorbeingarealityTVareyou'renotgoingtobeanyofthosethings.

Thetruthis,beingsuccessfuliswon'tloveeverysubjectthatyouwon'tclickwitheveryteacherthatyouhave.

Noteveryhomeworkassignmentwillseemcompletelyrelevanttoyourliferightatthisyouwon'tnecessarilysucceedateverythingthefirsttimeyoutry.
