Steps:

3.Downloadplans.It'srecommendedthatyoudownloadaprofessionallydesignedplanforyourmodel.Thisisessentiallyfortheflyingmodelsbecausetheymaynotflywithoutkeepingthesymmetryandpropermeasures.It'samustforthestaticmodelstoobecausetheymustrepresentarealairplaneinexactscale.

2.Createanindentationusingacenterpunch.Apunchisasmall,slendertoolwithapointedendthatallowsyoutocreateasmallindentationintheworksurface.Thisindentationwillhelpkeepyourdrillbitfromslippingwhenstartingthepilothole.Positionthetipofthepunchoveryourpencilmark,andthenstrikethepunchgentlywithahammer.

3.Determinetheappropriatesizebitfordrillingyourpilothole.Asageneralruleofthumb,yourpilotholeshouldbeslightlysmallerthanthediameterofyourscrew.Thiswillremoveasmuchmaterialaspossible,whichwillreducethelikelihoodofsplitting,butwillstillleaveenoughmaterialforthescrew'sthreadstogripinto.Exactrecommendationsforpilotholediametersbasedonscrewsizescanbelookeduponline.However,avisualcheckofyourdrillbitagainstthescrewwillsufficeformostapplications.Itisbesttoerronthesmallersidewhenchoosingabit;apilotholecanalwaysbemadebigger,butnotsmaller.
