RFIDisatechnologywhichusesradiocommunicationbetweentagsandreaderstoautomaticallyidentifythelocationsofitems.InanetworkedenvironmentofRFIDreaders,enormousdataaregeneratedfromtheproliferationofRFIDreaders.Therawdatageneratedfromthereaderscannotbedirectlyusedbytheapplicationbecauseitconsistsofenormousvolumeofdataduplication,falsepositive,andfalsenegative.Thus,theRFIDdatarepositoriesmustcopewithanumberofqualityissues.Thesedataqualityissuesincludedataredundancy,falsepositive,andfalsenegative.Poordataqualityhasadverseeffectsattheoperational,tactical,andstrategiclevelsofanorganization.Thisisespeciallytrueinthehealthcarefieldwherecostpressuresandthedesiretoimprovepatientcaredriveeffortstointegrateandcleanorganizationaldata.

WhatisthebasiccomponentofRFID?

ThemostbasicRFIDsystemconsistsofthreeparts:

Tag:

WhatisthebasicprincipleofRFIDtechnology?

ThebasicprincipleofRFIDtechnologyisnotcomplex:

Labelintothefield,Receiveradiofrequencysignalsfromreadercollision,withalltheenergystoredinachipoftheproductinformation(passivetag,thereisnosourcelabelorlabels),Oractivelytosendafrequencysignals(activetagandtolabelorlabels);toreadinformationandunderstandingofthedecoderafterthecentralinformationsystemstocarryouttherelevantdataprocessing.

BasicworkingprocessoftheRFIDsystem

TheRFIDsystemofbasicworkflowis:

TheapplicationofRFIDsystem

(1)Applicationinhealthcare

Localizationofpatients,staff,suppliesandequipmentisveryimportantforhealthcarecenterstoimproveservice,savecosts,andreducerisks.PilotprojectsinhospitalsdemonstratethatRFIDlocalizationisavaluableapproach.LANDMARC,anRFIDlocalizationsystem(Lietal.2004),hasbeenappliedtofacilitatethemanagementofhospitalsandotherorganizationsincaseofemergency.Thesystemoperatesatthefrequencyof308MHz,andiscomposedofactivetags,landmarktags,readers,andcommunicationdevices.Thepositionofanactivetagcanbedeterminedbycomparingthesignalstrengthdetectedandthesignalstrengthsoflandmarktags.Usingthissystemtomonitortheinfectiouspatientscanreducethenumberofhealthcareprofessionalsandensuretimelyresponseforemergency.Meanwhile,integratedbusinesssystemsandservices(IBSS)announcedasuccesspilotstudyforusingRFIDtechnologytolocateassetsandpersonnelatalargehealthcarefacilityinChicago(O’Connor2005).EmoryHealthcaresuccessfullydeployed2.45GHzactiveRFIDdevicestotrackinfusionpumpsandotherhigh-valueequipmenttoimproveassetmanagementandutilization(O’Connor2007).Notethatthelasttwohealthcareapplicationsdonotemploylocalizationalgorithms,instead,theyestimatetheobjectlocationbasedonthedetectionfromanearbysensor.Theaccuracyoflocationcanbeimprovedbyintegratinglocalizationalgorithms.
