Aftermanytiringsigningtoursfromcitytocity,Atwoodthoughttheremustbeabetterwaytodothem.Shehiredsometechnicalexpertsandstartedherowncompanyin2004.TogethertheydesignedtheLongPen.Here’showitworks:

WorkontheLongPenbeganinAtwood’sbasement（地下室）.Atfirst,theyhadnoideaitwouldbeashardasitturnedouttobe.Thedevicewentthroughseveralversions,includingonethatactuallyhadsmokecomingoutofit.Theinvestingfinallycompleted,testsrunsweremadeinOttawa,andtheLongPenwasofficiallylaunchedatthe2006LondonBookFair.Fromhere,AtwoodconductedtwotransatlanticbooksigningsofherlatestbookforfansinTorontoandNewYorkCity.

TheLongPenproducesauniquesignatureeachtimebecauseitcopiesthemovementoftheauthorinrealtime.Ithasseveralotherpotentialapplications.Itcouldincreasecreditcardsecurityandallowpeopletosigncontractsfromanotherprovince.ThevideoexchangebetweensignerandreceivercanberecordedonDVDforproofwhenlegaldocumentsareused.
