 I'mgoingtotrytoincreasethelifespan ofeverysinglepersoninthisroom bysevenandahalfminutes. Literally,youwilllivesevenandhalfminuteslonger thanyouwouldhaveotherwise, justbecauseyouwatchedthistalk.

37Okay,someofyouarelookingalittlebitskeptical. That'sokay,becausecheckitout-- Ihavemathtoprovethatitispossible. Anditwon'tmakealotofsensenow. I'llexplainitalllater, justpayattentiontothenumberatthebottom:

11Now,becauseI'magamedesigner,youmightbethinkingtoyourself, Iknowwhatshewantsustodowiththoseminutes, shewantsustospendthemplayinggames. Nowthisisatotallyreasonableassumption, giventhatIhavemadequiteahabitofencouragingpeople tospendmoretimeplayinggames. Forexample,inmyfirstTEDTalk, Ididproposethatweshouldspend21billionhoursaweek asaplanetplayingvideogames.

36Now,21billionhours,it'salotoftime. It'ssomuchtime,infact,thatthenumberoneunsolicitedcomment thatIhaveheardfrompeopleallovertheworld sinceIgavethattalk,isthis:

 Jane,gamesaregreatandall,butonyourdeathbed, areyoureallygoingtowishyouspentmoretimeplayingAngryBirds?

 Thisideaissopervasive--thatgamesareawasteoftime thatwewillcometoregret--thatIhearitliterallyeverywhereIgo. Forexample,truestory:

Justafewweeksago, thiscabdriver,uponfindingoutthatafriendandIwereintown foragamedeveloper'sconference, turnedaroundandsaid--andIquote-- "Ihategames.Wasteoflife.Imaginegettingtotheendofyourlife andregrettingallthattime."

23Now,Iwanttotakethisproblemseriously. Imean,Iwantgamestobeaforceforgoodintheworld. Idon'twantgamerstoregretthetimetheyspentplaying, timethatIencouragedthemtospend. SoIhavebeenthinkingaboutthisquestionalotlately. Whenwe'reonourdeathbeds,willweregret thetimewespentplayinggames?

42Now,thismaysurpriseyou,butitturnsout thereisactuallysomescientificresearchonthisquestion.It'strue.Hospiceworkers, thepeoplewhotakecareofusattheendofourlives, recentlyissuedareportonthemostfrequentlyexpressedregrets thatpeoplesaywhentheyareliterallyontheirdeathbeds. Andthat'swhatIwanttosharewithyoutoday-- thetopfiveregretsofthedying.

43Now,asfarasIknow,nooneevertoldoneofthehospiceworkers, IwishI'dspentmoretimeplayingvideogames, butwhenIhearthesetopfiveregretsofthedying, Ican'thelpbuthearfivedeephumancravings thatgamesactuallyhelpusfulfill.

57Forexample,IwishIhadn'tworkedsohard. Formanypeople,thismeans,IwishI'dspentmoretimewithmyfamily,withmykidswhentheyweregrowingup. Well,weknowthatplayinggamestogetherhastremendous familybenefits. ArecentstudyfromBrighamYoungUniversity SchoolofFamilylifereportedthatparentswho spendmoretimeplayingvideogameswiththeirkids havemuchstrongerreal-liferelationshipswiththem.

21IwishI'dstayedintouchwithmyfriends. Well,hundredsofmillionsofpeople usesocialgameslikeFarmVilleorWordsWithFriends tostayindailycontactwithreal-lifefriendsandfamily. Arecentstudyfrom[UniversityofMichigan]showed thatthesegamesareincrediblypowerful relationship-managementtools. Theyhelpusstayconnectedwithpeopleinoursocialnetwork thatwewouldotherwisegrowdistantfrom, ifweweren'tplayinggamestogether.

50IwishI'dletmyselfbehappier. Well,hereIcan'thelpbutthinkofthegroundbreakingclinicaltrialsrecentlyconductedatEastCarolinaUniversity thatshowedthatonlinegamescanoutperformpharmaceuticalsfortreatingclinicalanxietyanddepression. Just30minutesofonlinegameplayadaywasenoughtocreatedramaticboostsinmood andlong-termincreasesinhappiness.

14IwishI'dhadthecouragetoexpressmytrueself. Well,avatarsareawaytoexpressourtrueselves,ourmostheroic,idealizedversionofwhowemightbecome. YoucanseethatinthisalteregoportraitbyRobbieCooper ofagamerwithhisavatar. AndStanfordUniversityhasbeendoingresearchforfiveyearsnow todocumenthowplayingagamewithanidealizedavatar changeshowwethinkandactinreallife, makingusmorecourageous,moreambitious, morecommittedtoourgoals.

22Nowletmetellyouthatstory. Itstartedtwoyearsago,whenIhitmyheadandgotaconcussion. Nowtheconcussiondidn'thealproperly, andafter30daysIwasleftwithsymptomslikenonstopheadaches, nausea,vertigo,memoryloss,mentalfog. Mydoctortoldmethatinordertohealmybrain,Ihadtorestit. SoIhadtoavoideverythingthattriggeredmysymptoms. Formethatmeantnoreading,nowriting,novideogames, noworkoremail,norunning,noalcohol,nocaffeine. Inotherwords--andIthinkyouseewherethisisgoing-- noreasontolive.

54Ofcourseit'smeanttobefunny, butinallseriousness,suicidalideationisquitecommon withtraumaticbraininjuries. Ithappenstooneinthree,andithappenedtome. Mybrainstartedtellingme,Jane,youwanttodie. Itsaid,you'renevergoingtogetbetter. Itsaid,thepainwillneverend.

17Andthesevoicesbecamesopersistentandsopersuasive thatIstartedtolegitimatelyfearformylife,whichisthetimethatIsaidtomyselfafter34days-- andIwillneverforgetthismoment-- Isaid,Iameithergoingtokillmyself orI'mgoingtoturnthisintoagame.

 Iknewfromresearchingthepsychologyofgamesformorethanadecade thatwhenweplayagame--andthisisinthescientificliterature-- wetackletoughchallengeswithmorecreativity, moredetermination,moreoptimism, andwe'remorelikelytoreachouttoothersforhelp.AndIwantedtobringthesegamertraitstomyreal-lifechallenge, soIcreatedarole-playingrecoverygame calledJanetheConcussionSlayer.

21Shebecamemyfirstallyinthegame, myhusbandKiyashjoinednext, andtogetherweidentifiedandbattledthebadguys. Nowthiswasanythingthatcouldtriggermysymptoms andthereforeslowdownthehealingprocess, thingslikebrightlightsandcrowdedspaces. Wealsocollectedandactivatedpower-ups. ThiswasanythingIcoulddoonevenmyworstday tofeeljustalittlebitgood, justalittlebitproductive. Thingslikecuddlingmydogfor10minutes, orgettingoutofbedandwalkingaroundtheblockjustonce.

53Nowthegamewasthatsimple:

 Adoptasecretidentity,recruityourallies, battlethebadguys,activatethepower-ups. Butevenwithagamesosimple, withinjustacoupledaysofstartingtoplay, thatfogofdepressionandanxiety wentaway.Itjustvanished.Itfeltlikeamiracle. Nowitwasn'tamiraclecurefortheheadaches orthecognitivesymptoms. Thatlastedformorethanayear, anditwasthehardestyearofmylifebyfar. ButevenwhenIstillhadthesymptoms, evenwhileIwasstillinpain,Istoppedsuffering.

26Nowwhathappenednextwiththegamesurprisedme. Iputupsomeblogpostsandvideosonline,explaininghowtoplay. Butnoteverybodyhasaconcussion,obviously, noteveryonewantstobe"theslayer," soIrenamedthegameSuperBetter.

40AndsoonIstartedhearingfrompeopleallovertheworld whowereadoptingtheirownsecretidentity,recruitingtheirownallies,andtheyweregetting"superbetter" facingchallengeslikecancerandchronicpain, depressionandCrohn'sdisease. EvenpeoplewereplayingitforterminaldiagnoseslikeALS. AndIcouldtellfromtheirmessagesandtheirvideos thatthegamewashelpingtheminthesameways thatithelpedme. Theytalkedaboutfeelingstrongerandbraver. Theytalkedaboutfeelingbetterunderstoodbytheirfriendsandfamily. Andtheyeventalkedaboutfeelinghappier, eventhoughtheywereinpain,eventhoughtheyweretackling thetoughestchallengeoftheirlives.

23Nowatthetime,I'mthinkingtomyself,whatisgoingonhere?

 Imean,howcouldagamesotrivialintervenesopowerfully insuchserious,andinsomecaseslife-and-death,circumstances?
