Divorceandfamilybreakdownwerevirtuallyunheardofjust100yearsago.Now,however,almosthalfofallmarriagesfail.Thisphenomenonissymptomaticofthegrowingdistancebetweenfamilymembersinmodernsociety.Inthisessay,Iintendtoexplorethesourcesofthisproblemalongwithsomepossiblesolutionstoit.
Chiefamongthecausesofthisproblemisthemodernlifestyle.Today’sparentshavetoworkharderthanthoseofpreviousgenerationstosupporttheirfamilies.Traditionally,oneparentassumedtheroleofbreadwinner,whiletheother-typicallythemother-actedasthehomemaker.Recently,though,doubleincomefamilieshavebecomethenorm.Consequently,anincreasingnumberofchildrennowgrowupinaparentlessenvironment.Littlewonder,then,thattheyfeelalienated.Anothercontributingfactoristhepassiveandsolitarynatureofmanymodernformsofentertainment.
