Inthehighlycompetitiveperiodfollowingtheenergycrisisoftheearly1970's,theautomotiveindustryhadtoshiftattentionincreasinglytowardsimprovementofthequalityoftheproduct,yetstillkeepingitspricesaslowaspossible.PriortothatGKNAxlesLtd,totakeoptimumadvantageofeconomiesofscale,hadbeenproducingathighlycompetitivepricesastandardrangeofaxlesofdifferenttypesandsizes,fromwhichallcustomers'needscouldbesatisfied.Becausevehiclemanufacturershadnothithertohadtoplacesuchagreatemphasisonfueleconomy,andthereforeonlightweight,thesestandardaxlescouldcaterreliablyforallconditionslikelytobemetinawidevarietyofapplications.Nowvehiclemanufacturersrequireaxlesdesignedanddevelopedfortheirspecificapplications.Asaxledesignisbecomingincreasinglyspecialised,customersareincreasinglyraisingtheiraspirationsintermsofperformanceanreliability.Forthisreason,theyareturningtospecialistssuchasGKNAxlesLtdwhohavetheabilitytoprovideaxlesforawidevarietyofvehicles。

  Hypoidgearsystemsaremorecommonlyusedthanspiralbevels.Theirprincipleadvantagesarethatpinionsofaspecificratioarebigger,theirteethprofilesareoflargeradius,theyareinherentlystrongerandmoredurable,theirmeshingareasarelarger,andtheygeneratelessnoise
