Whatisacademicwriting?

Differenttraditions,conventionsandwaysofthinkinghavedevelopedindifferentareasofknowledgeovertheyears,soyouwillfindthatacademicwritingdiffersfromdisciplinetodiscipline.Researchers,whentheypublishtheirwork,arealwaysputtingforwardanargumentofsomekind,buthowmuchthisisobvious,howitisstructured,whatcountsasevidence,dependsonthedisciplineorfield:

whetheritishistory,zoology,physicsorwhatever.

Authorityandcredibility

Youneedtodevelopyourowncredibleacademicvoice–asamarketer,asociologist,anarthistorian.Thesevoiceswillallsounddifferent,butallthetimeyouaredevelopingyourrepertoire.Thispracticewillbeofgreatvalueonceyouareagraduateandneedingtoproducedifferenttypesoftextswithdifferentconventionsfordifferentaudiencesinyourworkplace.

Inacademicwriting,yourideasandclaimsmustbesupportedbyevidenceandargument,andthesourcesofallideasanddatamustbeacknowledged.

Apointworthrememberingisthatyourlecturerwillaskthesametypesofquestionswhenreadingyouressaysasyouaskwhenreadingcritically.Thatis,theywillbelookingtoseehowwellsupportedyourideasorargumentsare,andwhetherthatsupportisvalid,relevant,sufficientandconvincing.

Theywillconsideranyclaimsyoumakeinthelightoftheevidenceandsupportyouprovide,andintermsoftherangeandcurrencyofsourcesyouhaveconsultedandreferredto.

Acknowledgingexceptionsinyourwriting(orlimitationsinaresearchstudy)reducesthelikelihoodofthereaderraisingthoseissuestocriticizeyourargumentordisputeyourfindings.Thereareavarietyofexpressionsyoucanusetoconveypreciseshadesofmeaninglikequalifiersandquantifiers.
