ABSTRACT

SinceHallidayandHasanpublishedtheirbookCohesioninEnglishin1976,coherencebecameapopulartopicoftextanalysisandtranslation,attractingmoreattentionfromlinguisticsofdifferentschools.Withthedevelopmentoftextlinguistics,moreandmorescholarshaveapplieditsachievementstothetheoryandpracticeoftranslation.Textlinguisticshasbroughtnewvigorintothetranslationfield.

Coherenceisthecenteraboutwhichtextanalysisrevolveswhichisalsothevitalelementconcernedintextualtranslation.Coherence,asthekeypropertyoftext,isdefinedinmanywaysbyscholars.However,theirproposalsofcoherencejustconcernacertainaspectandtherelevanceofcoherencetotranslationispaidlittleattentionto.Soitisnecessaryforustomakeacomprehensivestudyofthecoherencefortheaimofachievingsuccessfulcommunication.Basedontheirstudies,theauthorconcludesthatcoherenceisasemanticunit,anditmeansthesemanticrelatednessorunityoftext,andembodiesthelogicalorfunctionalrelationunderlyingagiventext.Especiallyitisarathercomplicatedphenomenonrequiringtheparticipationofmanydisciplinessuchassemantics,pragmatics,andpsychology;noindividualtheorycanofferinclusiveexplanationofit.

Textualtranslationisoneoftheprocessesofrecognizingandreestablishingcoherenceatalllevelsinthetargettext（TT）.Coherenceprovidesaneffectiveandsignificantbasefortranslationstudies,becauseitplaysavitalroleeitherinestablishingthecontentandform,orinunderstandingthesourcetextandreconstructingthetargettext.Ascoherenceinvolvesbothintra-textualelementsandextra-textualelements,atranslatorshouldpayattentiontoallaspectsofcoherenceduringtextualtranslation.Theauthorofthisthesisintendstoapplycoherencetheorytotextualtranslationfromthreeperspectives:

semanticcoherence,structuralcoherence,cognitivecoherence.Thestructureofthisthesisisasfollows:

Chapter1servesasatheoreticalbasisforthispaperbydealingwithsomebasicitemsrelevanttothepaper’stopic:

text,textureandtie,therelationshipbetweentextandtranslation,coherenceasafeatureoftranslation.

Chapter2discussestheconceptofcoherenceputforwardbydifferentscholars,fromwhichwecouldfindcoherenceisapproachedfromawidevarietyofperspectivesandatdifferentlevelsbasedondivergentclassifications.Then,thisproposalisbriefedinthatcoherenceintexttranslationshouldbediscussedfromintra-textualangleandextra-textualangle.

Chapter3elaboratesthethreeperspectivesofcoherencerespectively:

semanticcoherence,structuralcoherence,andcognitivecoherence.InthischaptertheauthormakessomecomparisonofcoherencebetweenChineseandEnglish.Besidesthetheoreticalelaboration,theauthorgivessometypicalexamples.ThroughanalysiswemayfindthereexistsmuchdifferenceinmaintainingcoherencebetweenChineseandEnglish.Accordingtothedifference,theauthorgivessomeconversionmethodsforeveryperspective.
