Besidesteaching,Duncansanginseveraloperaswithperformerswhowereallblack.Butitseemedthathealwayswouldbeknownmainlyasaconcertartist.However,hislifetookadifferentturninthemiddleof1930s.Atthattime,thefamousAmericanmusicwriterGeorgeGershwinwaslookingforsomeonetoplayaleadingpartinhisnewworkPorgyandBess.Amusiccritic(评论家)ofTheNewYorkTimesnewspapersuggestedToddDuncan.Duncanhadalmostdecidednottotryforthepartasheknewitwouldnotbeeasytogetit.Buthechangedhismind.HesangapiecefromanItalianoperatoGershwin.HehadsungonlyforafewminuteswhenGershwinofferedhimthepart.HebecamefamousbecauseofthepartinPorgyandBess.
