Thetermcloningdescribesanumberofdifferentprocessesthatcanbeusedtoproducegeneticallyidenticalcopiesofabiologicalentity（实体；实际存在物）.Thecopiedmaterial,whichhasthesamegeneticmakeupastheoriginal,isreferredtoasaclone.

Researchershaveclonedawiderangeofbiologicalmaterials,includinggenes,_cells,_tissuesandevenentireorganisms,suchasasheep.

Overthelast50years,scientistshaveconductedcloningexperimentsinawiderangeofanimalsusingavarietyoftechniques.In1979,researchersproducedthefirstgeneticallyidenticalmicebysplittingmouseembryosinthetesttubeandthenimplantingtheresultingembryosintothewombsofadultfemalemice.Shortlyafterthat,researchersproducedthefirstgeneticallyidenticalcows,sheepandchickensbytransferring（使转移；使调动）thenucleusofacelltakenfromanearlyembryointoaneggthathadbeenemptiedofitsnucleus.

Itwasnotuntil1996,however,thatresearcherssucceededincloningthefirstmammalfromamature（somatic）celltakenfromanadultanimal.After276attempts,ScottishresearchersfinallyproducedDolly,thelambfromtheudder（牛、羊等的）乳房）cellofa6yearoldsheep.Twoyearslater,researchersinJapanclonedeightcalvesfromasinglecow,butonlyfoursurvived.

Besidescattleandsheep,othermammalsthathavebeenclonedfromsomaticcellsinclude:

cat,deer,dog,horse,mule,ox,rabbitandrat.Inaddition,arhesusmonkeyhasbeenclonedbyembryosplitting.
