ResearchersfromHarvardUniversityandtheUniversityofCalifornia,SanDiego,havefoundanansweraspartofastudy.

NicholasChristakisandJamesFowlerbasedthestudyontheemotionalhealthofalmost5,000people.Theyusedinformationgatheredoveraperiodof20years,until2003,intheFraminghamHeartStudy.Thatstudybegan60yearsagoinFramingham,Massachusetts,tolearnmoreabouttherisksofheartattackandstroke.

Thenewstudyfoundthatfriendsofhappypeoplehadagreaterchanceofbeinghappythemselves.Andthesmallerthephysicaldistancebetweenfriends,thelargertheeffect:

theyhadoneachother'shappiness.

Forexample,apersonwas20percentmorelikelytofeelhappyifafriendlivingwithin1.5kilometerswasalsohappy.Havingahappyneighborwholivednextdoorincreasedanindividual'schanceofbeinghappyby34percent.Theeffectsoffriends'happinesslastedforuptoayear.
