Duringthetsunami(海啸)disasterof2004,over300,000peopledied.Noonehascountedthenumberofanimalskilled,butweknowthatitwasn’tmany.Allovertheregion,beforethedisasterstruck,animalswerebehavingstrangely.

Shortlybeforethetsunami,inKhaolak,Thailand,twelveelephantsthatweregivingtouristsridesbecameagitated.Theysuddenlylefttheirusualhabitat,carryingfoursurprisedJapanesetouriststosafety.OntheeasterncoastofIndia,flamingos(火烈鸟),whichshouldbebreedingatthistimeofyear,suddenlyflewtohigherground.OfthetwothousandwildpigsthatliveinanIndiannaturereserve,onlyonewasfounddeadafterthetsunami.

Theideathattheanimalsareabletopredictdisastersisnothingnew.Infact,ithasbeenwell-recordedovertheyears.TwelvehoursbeforeHurricaneCharliehitFloridain2004,fourteensharkslefttheirnaturalhabitatandstayedindeepwatersfortwoweeks.Thesharks,whichwerebeingobservedbyUSscientists,hadneverdonethisbefore.Theyescapedthehurricane.Inthewinterof1975inHaicheng,China,snakeswhichwouldnormallyhavebeenhibernating(冬眠)wereseenontheground.Dayslatertherewasabigearthquakestriking.

Unlikehumanbeings,wildanimals’sensesaresharperandtheycanfeeleventhesmallestchangesintheenvironment.Inotherwords,theyseenaturalwarningsthatareinvisibletothehumaneye.Ancientpeopleprobablyhadthesimilar“senses”,whichtheyneededtosurvive,butthesehavebeenlosttousasmoderntechnologyleadsusfurtherawayfromthedangerthatnaturecreates.
