Toolsfortheuseoftheteacherandstudents)

1-1.UsingtheObjectives

Bythetimetheyreachthesecondyear,andthisbook,studentswillbefamiliarwithObjectives.Inallthebooks,eachUnitbeginswithastatementofwhatthewriterofthematerialhopestheywilllearnfromwhatfollows.StudentshaveObjectivesaresetoutatthestartofeachUnitofEnglishinaChangingWorldandyouhavethemassembledhereforeaseandspeedofreference.

Youcanusetheminanyorallofthefollowingways:

∙Organisingyourownpreparatoryworkforclasses.

ReadingthroughtheseObjectiveshelpsyougetanoverallviewofthepurposesofthebookandthematerialinit.Youcandothisveryrapidly.Youcanthenmakeanassessmentofhowmuchofthematerialisalreadyfamiliartoyou-andsoofthetimeyouwillneedtospendinpreparatorywork.

∙Dealingwithsomeofthequestionsstudentsask

Studentssometimesaskquestionsaboutmattersthataredealtwithfullyinalaterpartofthebook.Suchquestionsoftenarisefromfeelingsofanxiety.Theycanhoweverwasteagreatdealofthetimeofteacherandclass.IfyouhavemadeyourselffamiliarwiththeseObjectives(andwiththeSummariesthatfollow)youcanrefertothelaterUnit,Activityandpage.Inthatwayyouavoidwasteoftime,andlaterrepetition,andyoucanprovidethereassurancethatthequestionerneeds.

Justoneortwosuchanswerswillprobablybeenoughtoconvinceyourclassthatyouaresomeonethoroughlyversedinthesubject!
