1.Orwell:
GeorgeOrwellisthepseudonymorpennameofEricArthurBlair(1903-50),Britishnovelistandessayist,bornatMotihari,Bengal,India.Hisfather,RichardWellesleyBlair,wasaminorcustomsofficialintheopiumdepartmentoftheIndianCivilService.WhenOrwellwas4yearsold,hisfamilyreturnedtoEnglandandsettledatHenley,avillagenearLondon.WhenOrwellwas8yearsold,hewassenttoaprivatepreparatoryschoolinSussex.HelaterclaimedthathisexperiencestheredeterminedhisviewsontheEnglishclasssystem.
AfterattendingWellingtonandEton,heserved(1922-27)withtheIndianImperialPoliceinBurma.Hisresignationfromtheservicesuggeststhathehadcometounderstandtheimperial-ismwhichhewasservingandhadrejectedit.HisexperienceinBurmaisdescribedinhisfirstnovelBurmeseDays(1934).hisreturntoEuropein1927helivedinvoluntarypoverty,firstinParisandtheninLondon,aperiodwhichisthebasisofhisbookDownandOutinParisandlondon(1933).
CommissionedbytheLeftBookClubtbdoasurveyonun-employment,OrwellspentseveralmonthslivingamongthepoorinLancashire.TheproductofhisobservationswasTheRoadtoWiganPier(1937).In1936hefoughtwiththePOUM(PartidoObrerodeUnificationMarxista)ontheRepublicansideintheSpanishCivilWarandwasseverelywounded.HomagetoCatalonia(1938),anaccountoftheeightmonthshespentfightinginSpain,markedthematuringcLf,hisviewsandhisincreasingdissatisfactionwithleftwingorthodo~y.Hisearlynovelsarehighlyautobiographical.AllofOrwell'sworks,however,areconcernedwiththesociopoliticalconditionsofhistime,notablywiththeproblemofhumanfreedom.
Rejectedformilitaryserviceonaccountoftuberculosis,aridawoundhehadreceivedinSpain,OrwellspentthewaryearswiththeoverseasserviceoftheB.B.C.In1945hepublishedhismostsuccessfulbook,AnimalFarmasatiricalfantasyattackingcommunismaspracticedinmeSovietUnion.Thisfantasyrelateswhathappenstoanimalswhofreethemselvesandthenareagainenslavedthroughviolenceandfraud.ItisuponthisbookthatOrwell'sreputationasananticommunistwriterisbased.NineteenEighty-Four(1949)isanelaboratesatireonmodernpolitics,aprophetibnoveldescribingthedehumanizationofmaninamechanistic,totalitananworld.Orwell'sothernovelsincludeAClergyman'sDaughter(1935),KeeptheAspidistraFlying(1936),andcomingUpforAir(1940).Themasterofasuperb,lucidprosestyle,Orwell
wrotemanyliteraryessays,whichscm6criticsfindsuperiortohisnovels.HisvolumesofessaysincludeDickens,DaliandOthers(1946),ShootinganElephant(1950),andtheCollectedessays.JournalismandLettersofGeodgeOrwell(4volumns,1968).

Atonetimetherewereabout200,000JewsinMorocco.MostofthemweredescendantsofthosewhohadfledfromSpainandotherEuropeancountriesandsettledinthecoastalcities.OtherswereBerberswhoseancestorshadbeenConvertedtoJudaismbeforetheArabinvasionandrefusedtobecomeMuslims.TodaymostofthemhaveleftMorocco.
Moroccansaremainlyfarmers(70%)whotrytogrowtheirownfood.Theyoftenusecamels,donkeysandmulestopulltheirplows.Inthesouthafewtribesmenstillwanderfromplacetoplaceinthedesert.
3.MarrakechorMarrakesh:
inwestcentralMorocco,attheNorthernfootofthehighAtlas,130milessouthofCasablanca,thechiefseaport.Thecityrenownedforleathergoods,isoneoftheprincipalcommercialcentersofMorocco.Itwasfounded(1062)bytheAlmoravidleaderYusufibnTashfinandwasthecapitalofMoroccofromthenuntil1147andagainfrom1550to
1660.ItwascapturedbytheFrenchin1912.Yearlyrainfallis9inchesandlimitedtowintermonths.Ithasextremelyhotsummersbutmildwinters.Theoldcity,withitslabyrinthofcrooked,deadendstreets,presentsanovercrowded,rundownappearance.Themoderncity(begun1913)hasgrown
uptothewest,alongtheroadtoM0gador.ItsmoderngrowthdatesfromFrenchoccupation(1912).ThecitywasformerlyalsocalledMorocco.
