Sec.1755.900RUSspecificationforfilledfiberopticcables.

(a)Scope

.

(1)Thissectioncoverstherequirementforfilledfiberopticcablesintendedforaerialinstallationeitherbyattachmenttoasupportstrandorbyanintegratedself-supportingarrangement,forundergroundapplicationbyplacementinaduct,orforburiedinstallationseitherbytrenchingorbydirectplowing.

(i)Theopticalwaveguidesareglassfibershavingdirectly-appliedprotectivecoatings,andarecalled``fibers'',herein.Thesefibersmaybeassembledineitherloosefiberbundleswithaprotectivecoretube,encasedinseveralprotectivebuffertubes,orintightbuffertubes.

(ii)Fillers,strengthmembers,corewraps,andbeddingtapesmaycompletethecablecore.

(iii)Thecoreorbuffertubescontainingthefibersandtheintersticesbetweenthebuffertubes,fillers,andstrengthmembersinthecorestructurearefilledwithasuitablematerialtoexcludewater.

(iv)Thecablestructureiscompletedbyanextrudedoverallplasticjacket.Thisjacketmayhavestrengthmembersembeddedinit,insomedesigns.

(v)Buriedinstallationrequiresanarmorundertheouterjacket.

(vi)Forself-supportingcabletheouterjacketmaybeextrudedoverthesupportmessengerandcablecore.

(2)Thecableisfullycolorcodedsothateachfiberisdistinguishablefromeveryotherfiber.Abasiccolorschemeoftwenty-fourcolorsallowsindividualfiberidentification.Coloredtubes,binders,threads,stripings,ormarkingsprovidefibergroupidentification.

(3)Cablemanufacturedtothissectionmustdemonstratecompliancewiththequalificationtestingrequirementstoensuresatisfactoryend-useperformancecharacteristicsfortheintendedapplications.

(4)OpticalcabledesignsnotspecificallyaddressedbythissectionmaybeallowedifacceptedbyRUS.Justificationforacceptanceofamodifieddesignmustbeprovidedtosubstantiateproductutilityandlongtermstabilityandendurance.

(5)AllcablessoldtoRUSborrowersforprojectsinvolvingRUSloanfundsunderthissectionmustbeacceptedbyRUSTechnicalStandardsCommittee``A''(Telephone).Forcablesmanufacturedtothespecificationofthissection,alldesignchangestoanaccepteddesign

mustbesubmittedforacceptance.RUSwillbethesoleauthorityonwhatconstitutesadesignchange.
