Abstract
TheAmericanmovieOneFlewovertheCuckoo'sNestisascreenadaptionofAmericannovelistbyKenKesey.Themovietellsastoryaboutpatients’rebellionsledbyMC.Murphy.ThispaperanalyzesMurphy’sgood-nature,braveryandspiritofresistancethroughtheintroductionofthesocialbackgroundandthesummaryofthefilm.Atthesametime,itdepictsthenormalpersons’oppressionofthementalpatientsinthecuckoo’snestandthepatients’sufferings.AllofthisanalysisleadthemainideathattheendingofthemovieisnotjustatragedywiththedeathofMurphy,butencouragingotherpatientstobebravetopursuefreedom.Whenwefacedunfairtreatment,weshouldbreaktheroutinetostriveforourownrights.Maybemostofuscan’tbeaherolikeMurphy,butweshouldchooseourownwayofbeing.

OneFlewOvertheCuckoo'sNesthasattractedaboundofattentionintheUSA,asMartinLevinregardedthenovelas“aglitteringparableofgoodandevil”intheNewYorkTimesBooksReview.The“good”meansthenovelitselfandthe“evil”meansthecrueltyofsocietyandthesuppressionofpolitic.AsitissaidthatthemovieisthereflectionofAmericansocietywhichisunderadepressingmood.Thepatientsareliketheruledandthedoctorsareliketherulers,livingunderoppression.Itisnodoubtthatallpatientshavelosttheirfreedom,andtheycan’tdowhatevertheywanttodo,suchaswatchingthegameshows.Timessaidthatthemovieisasymbolofprotestagainsttherulesandrestrictionsthathamperpeople’sthoughtsandactions.Manycriticshighlyofitandregarditasthebridgetothecounterculturemovementofthe1960s.Inmyopinion,thismoviehasgreatvalueofresearch.WecanlearnmoreaboutMurphyandAmericansocialground.Ihavebothreadthebookandwatchedthemovie.Afterwatchingthemovie,Ithinkthemovierevealsthebadthingthatwecan’teasilyseeinourreallife.Comparedwiththebook,themovieremovedlotsofdistortedandbloodypartsandomittedmuchcruelviolencetomakeitmoreacceptableandmild.Becausesomethingthatwecanbeeasilyexpressedbywordmaybedifficultlyexpressbymovie.Thepatientsinthehospitalhavealldifferentkindsofexperience,butMurphyisthemostspecialonewhopretendstobesufferingfrommentaldisease,itmaybethereasonforhimtochangeallthepeople.Themoviehasshockedmanypeople,includingme.Whenwesufferingfromsomeunfairthingsinourreallife,ifwecanbebraveitwewillhavelesscomplaining.
2.BackgroundofMC.MurphyintheMovieOneFlewOvertheCuckoo'sNest
Asamovieadaptedfrombook,whatitreallywantstorevealistheunstableAmericansocietyin1860s,whichisn’tregardedasacalmandpeacefulstatebecauseofitstensepoliticalissuesandcomplexsocialproblems.In1960s,thereappearedcounter-culturalmovementwhosesupportersresistedpoliticalpower.Inordertoshowtheirdissatisfactionwiththetraditionalauthority,theyconductedsomerebellingactivities.ThemovementhasgreateffectonAmericanliterature.Ontheotherhand,thereweretwopieceofinterestingnewsinthemovie.TheoneisaboutTheBerlinWallwhichispoliticalissue,andtheotheroneisaboutabombattackwhichissocialproblem.ComparedwiththeapparentlyprosperousphenomenonofAmericathatwesaw,wemaybesurprisedwiththehiddencrisisofAmericanstate.
TherearemanyunstablefactsonAmericanstateandsociety.TheAmericanciviliansareunsatisfiedwiththegovernmentandtheydon’twanttoabidebythesystem.Murphyisoneofthemwhowanttostruggleforfreedom.
2.1.TheCounter-CulturalMovement
Counter-culturemovementisaprotestmovementconductedbyAmericanyouthinthelate1960sanddribbledawayduringthelate1970s.Theyouthhaveagreatdisappointmenttothesocietybecauseofsomesocialproblems.InordertoendtheVietnamWar,eliminateracialdiscriminationandadvocatemoredemocracy,theybegantotakesomemeasureswhichmaybenegative.Atthattime,theAmericanmainstreamculturewasscornedbymostofstudent.Theyevenquestionedandstruggleagainsttheauthorityandbegantorebelbymeansofabnormalbehaviorsliketakingdrugs,wearingbizarredresses,andnakedness…However,sometimestheystillprotestedwithoutsomuchgreatreasonatall.Itrevealedthedifferencebetweentheiridealexpectationandcruelsocialreality.Theyjustfightforwhatthesocietytheywant,althoughtheyaretoocrazy.Since1946,thefirst“BabyBoom”hadappearedinAmericawhichcalled“BabyBoom”generation.Becauseofthegrowingexperiencetheyconcernedmoreaboutthemovement,andtheywerethemainstreamofcounter-culturemovementinthe1960s.Becauseofthewidespreaddissatisfaction,postergenerationwantedtoprotestagainstallthemainstreamculturesthatAmericahadcometorepresent,concerningsex,religion,theartsandthewayoflifein1950s.Thosepeoplewhoseideologyhadagreateffectonthestudentsinthe1960swerewell-knownasthe“Beatgeneration”.Duringtheperiod,manywritersalsocreatedaboundofliteratureworksonthemovementincludeKeseywhoseworkalsodescribesthesocietyofAmericain1960s.
Thewriterswhoworkonthemovementmaylookdiffrentfromthemultitudeofpeople.Althoughthierbehaviourarenotreasonable,theyarejusttryingthierbesttoshowthierwills.Ifyouknowmoreaboutthebackgroundofthemovie,youwon’tbesurprisedthatMurphyusedtobeaddictedindrugsandgambling.
