Nooneinmyfamilyhadevertouchedsnowbefore.Wewerealllikelittlechildren---wepickeditup,madesnowballs,andthrewthemateachother!

Thenwecheckedinatthehotel.Ourroomoverlookedoneoftheskislopes.Theslopewasfloodlit,sowewatchedpeopleskiinguntil10p.m.Wecouldnotwaittotryitourselves.

Thenextdaywehadourfirstskiinglesson.Werentedourskisuits,bootsadskis,andwentoutsideontothesnow.Wearingskisforthefirsttimemakesyoufeelverystrange.Suddenlyyoufindyoucannotevenwalk.

Ourinstructortookusontoagentleslope,andshowedussomebasicskills.Inordertodoupahill,youhavetostandsideways,andgoupstepbystep.Youmustpointthetipsofyourskistogethersothatyoucanstop.However,thetipsmustnotcross,oryouwillfall.Youshouldnotskialoneincaseyoufallandgetinjured.Tobehonest,thatfirstlessonwasnotagreatsuccess,andIkeptfallingdown!

OneofmyteacherswasBritish.Atfirst,Icouldnotsayanythingtoher.However,laterIlearnthowtocommunicateinEnglishwithawesterner.

IthinkthatthetutorialcentrehasgivenmealotofconfidenceinusingEnglish.

Igotosleep

Ihavebeenattendingatutorialcentrefortwomonths.Ihavebeenforcedtoattendbymyparents,butIdonotthinkitisusefulforme.

Iamalwaysverytiredafterschool.SometimesIevensleepduringtheclassesintheevening.

Furthermore,theteachersareveryboring.Theygiveusalotofsupplementaryexercisesbuttheyteachusnothing.Iusuallyreadcomicsduringclass.SometimesIgotoavideoarcadeinstead.Ithinktutorialcentresareuseless

Wasteofmoney

Ihavestudiedatatutorialcentreforoneyear.However,IthinkthatIhavebeencheated.

Inmyfirstcentre,Iwasinaverybigclass.MyteacherwasanAustralian.Hejusttalkedabouthistravels.Icouldlearnnothingfromhim.Ileftwithinamonth.

ThenIaskallmyfriendsfortheiradvice.Asaresultoftheirrecommendations,Ienrolledonacourseatanothercentre.

Theteachersareexcellenthereandtheclassesaresmall.Wehavebeentaughtmanygoodtechniquesfordevelopingourlanguageandstudyingskills.

Therearebothgoodandbadtutorialcentres,soyoumustdosomedetectiveworkbeforeyouenroll.

However,themostimportantthingiswhetheryouarewillingtolearnandtoworkhard.Thekeyfactorisyourself. 

 

MorereadingIndependentlearning

Independentlearningisonesolutionforthosewhowanttocontinuetheireducation,nuthavenotimeforit.Itisoftendescribedas‘aclassofone’,becauseyouworkalone.Youstudyatyourownpace,atatimeandplaceconvenientforyou.Thesecoursescanhelpyougetadegree,helpyourcareer,orhelpyoulearnwhatinterestsyou.

Onetypeofindependentlearningisthecorrespondencecourse,Inacorrespondencecourse,aschoolsendsyoutextbooks,studyguides,andmaterialssuchasvideoandaudiodiscs.Youcommunicatewithyourteacherbymail.Yourteacherreadsyourpapersandmakescomments,Yourmarksarerecordedbytheschoolbeforetheyaremailedbacktoyou.

Anewerstyleofindependentlearningise-learning.Withe-learning,youstudyusingcomputersoftwareortheInternet.Youcanlearnonyourown,oryoucanenrollonacourse.Usually,inane-learningcourse,studentscommunicatewiththeirteachersthroughe-mail.However,somestudentshavebeenusingvideorecently.Thisallowstheteacherandthestudentstoseeandcommunicatewitheachotheratthesametime.

Independentlearninggivesyouthefreedomtoadaptyourlearningtoyourlifestyle.However,itrequiresself-disciplineandhardwork,sonoteveryoneissuccessfulatit.Thosewhoaresuccessfulreceivearealsenseofachievementandsatisfaction.

Mytopicis‘Fashion’.Fashionisimportanttoalmostallofus.Byfashion,weusuallymeanpopulartrendsinstylesofdress.Whenwedooutortoaparty,weusuallyliketowearfashionableclothes.Toillustratemytalk,Ihavebroughtalongfiveobjects.

Myfirstobjectisthisblouse.Itlooksbeautiful,doesn’tit?

It’smymostexpensivepieceofclothing,andIloveit.Itcostme$200.Itmayseemveryextravagant,butIcouldafforditwithmyownsavings.Itwasn’teasyformetoearnthemoney,butwhenbuyingclothes,Ithinkthemoreyouspendthebetterthequality.Soyousee,fashionisquiteimportanttome.

However,I’mnotaskeenonfashionasmybrotherGary.Lastsummer,hewonafreetriptoLondoninacontest.Theorganizerswantedtoshowhimsomefamoussights.Buthedidn’tappreciateoldbuildings.Hejustspentallhistimesearchingforthecoolestpairoftrainers!

Forhim,fashionwasmoreimportantthanculture.Thesearethetrainershebought.WasitworthatriptoLondontobuythese?

Well,Idon’tthinkso.Itwasawasteoftimeandmoney.

Fashionisverybigbusiness.Changesinfashioncancreateorruinjobs.Asanexample,Ihavebroughtthisblondewigtoshowyou.Itbelongstooneofmymum’sfriends.Inthe1960s,thesewereveryfashionable.Butafewyearslaterfashionschanged,andwomenworewigsmuchlessoften.Manywigfactoriescloseddown,andhundredsofworkerslosttheirjobs,whichwasterrible!

Fashioncanaffectthenaturalworld,aswell.I’mholdinganoldhatborrowedfromadramacompany.It’smadeofbeaverfur.Thesehatswereveryfashionableabout200yearsago.Asaresult,beaversalmostbecameextinct.Luckily,inthe1850s,thesehatswentoutofstyleandthebeaversweresaved.

Finally,weshouldrememberthesaying,’neverjudgeabookbyitscover.’Clotheswillnotmakeusmoreorlessclever,betterorworse,moreorlesshonest.IoncesawamovieaboutMotherTeresa.ShespentallherlifehelpingpoorpeopleinIndia,mostofwhomweredying.In1979,shewasawardedtheNobelPrizeforPeace.Whensheflewtogettheaward,sheworethesameoldclothesasusual,andcarriedallherpossessionsinalittlebaglikethis,whichIboughtinamarket.Thisremindsusthatfashionisnotthemostimportantthinginlife.
