ThisisthegateofN.Y.Cinthe1890s.ucantouchit,asucanfeel,in1890sthematerialwasalsomadeofthismaterial.

Firstpart:

HistroyofJiaotongUniversity

Plzfollowmetocometothefirstpart,herewemainlyintroducetheestablishmentofourschool.N.Y.Cwassetupin1896andlastedto1904.Herein1928thecollegechangeditsnameintoJiaotonguniversitybcoftheNorthernExpedition,anditbrokeawayfromtheTransportationDepartmentsinceitnolongerexisted.AndatthattimethelocationwasinstillinShanghai.Notunitil1956didourschoolbecomeindependentandwascalled“Xi’anJiaotongUniversity.

Hereitshowesuthechanges,astimeislimited,Ijustpickoutsomethingimportanttosay:

atfirstJiaotonguniversitywasmadeupof3parts:

Tangshanmainlyforcivilengineering,whichisnowxi’nanjiaotongUniversity;Shanghai—Electricengineering,machinary,andTransportationManagement;andanotheroneisinBeijingwhichlaterbecameBeijingJiaotongUniversity.

Herearesomeotherthingse.g.thisistheseal,ourschoolbadge,thealumniassociation,schoolmotto,ourschoolsong.

Schoolemblem/badge:

thisistheoriginalformourtheschoolemblemasitappearsonthetiltepageofthe1904yearbook,thisoneisin1915.Andthesetwoweredesignedbytwostudentthen.Asyoucanseethereisashield,thesameasthebadgeofHarvardandYale.Itrepresentsloyaltyandthewillingofservingthepeople.andthatschoolemblemprior1926,andthenJan.1926,thisoneisformallyadopted.andthisisthecurrentoneTherethread-boundbooksmeansChinesetraditionalcultureandthebooksstandthererepresentwesternculture.Andthescalemeansthebalancebetweenthesetwokindsofculture.And1896standfortheestablishmentoftheUniversity.

Schoolsong:

thisistheschoolsongofN.Y.C.thenpriorto1917,andthatisthesuggestionfromZhangTianjinregarding“theschoolsong--->”1928,Oct.-->theschoolsonginEnglish.ThisistheschoolsongmusiccomposedbyXiaoYoumei.AndthatistheofficialletterfromthenpresidentLizhaohuan,datedMarch22,invitingXiaoYoumeitocomposemusicforschoolsong.andthelyricshere

Thetitleofthesongmeansbecomingthelightoftheworld,thatistosay,hopingJiaotongUnicanbeaworld-famousuniversity.Nowwearestillgoingforit

ZhangJiyuan:

borninHaiyan,Zhejiangprovince,enteredQingGovernmentaftersucceedinthehighestlevelexamduringthereginofGuangxu,andwasresponsibleforinternationalaffairs.

CaiYuanpei（1868-1940）,borninShaoxing,ZhejiangProvince;well-knowndemocraticrevolutionist,educatorandscientist,becamethepresidentofJiaotongUniversityinFebruary,15,1928.Butmainlyinhislife,heiswellknowsinceheisthepresidentofPekingUniversity

ThisisanarticlebyCaiYuanpeiincludedin“The40thAnniversaryMagazineofJiaotongUniversity”in1936

TangWenzhi:

heisaneminenteducatorandscholarofChineseculture,wasthePresidentofJiaotongUniversityfor14yearsfrom1907to1920.

Heisreallyarespectableperson.ItishewhomakeJiaotongUnibecomefamousforsciencealloverthecountry.AsuknowtheoriginalwishesofShengXuanhuaistobuildaUnigoodatbussinessorforeignlanguage.

Heisalsoverydevoted,hegavestudentsonChinesetraditionalcultureeveryweekend,evenafterhisretirementheoftenwentaroundthecampusandsawhowthingsweregoing.

SoinviewofhiscontributiontotheUniversitywenowhaveTangWenzhischolarship,rightnameafterhim:

AndthisisTherecordofthealumniattendingthe30thanniversarycelebrationofNanyangPublicCollege（writtenbyTangWenzhi）

Andin1913TangdraftedthenationalanthemoftheRepublicofChina

YeGongchuoborninPanyu,GuangdongProvince;statesman,educatorandcalligrapher,becamepresidentofJiaotongUniversityin1921.Itwasduringhispresidencythatthenameoftheschoolwaschangedto“JiaotongUniversity.”

AlthoughwecanhardlygivehimsomeexactcommentsonhimbutonethingthatiscertainisthathiscontributionthathebroughtinMITeducationsystem.Itisbecauseofthismeasure,studentsatthattimecanbeadmittedbyMITeasily,mucheasierthantoday:

HereShengxuandeaskedthegovernment’sagreementontheestablishmentofNangyangpublicCollegeandDachengHall.andherehesaidamodernschoolshouldbeallowedtowaive2examinations.

AndhereisthemoemrialtothethronebytheMinistryofPostandTransportationconcerningtheappointmentofahighofficialtosuperviseShanghaischoolsofhighereducation.AndthisisMemorialtothethronebytheMinistryofAcademicAffairsonrewardingstudents

AndthesepagesareforthecharterofNangyangCollege,somesimpleruleshavealreadyformedatthattime,sthlike:

JiaotongFemaleStudents:

JiaotongUniversityadmittedfemalestudentsin1927thoughnottheearliest,stillamongtheearilyones.However,atthattimefewfemalestudentscanbeadmitted,withtheresultthatin1931therewereonly18femalestudents.Buttheyalldidquiteagoodjobsincetheyarestrong-willed,intelligentanddelicated.andtheywonseveralprizesathomeorabroadanddemonstratedaparticulartalentesp.inEnglishpublicSpeakingandDebating,andsportstoo.Thisisthephotoofthefamalevolleyballteam.Topeople’ssurprise,thegoldmentalwinnersareallfemalestudentsinourschools’competition.Inaddition,amongtheveryfewfemalepostgraduatesintheperiodbeforetheestablishmentofNewChina,thereweretwofromJiaotongUniversity.TheywereYiXiaodongandXiaPeisu.XiaPeisu,studiedattheIndustryInstitutefrom1945and1947,andisnowanacademicianandadoctoraladvisorintheComputerScienceInstituteoftheChineseAcademyofSciences.SheisoneofthepioneersofcomputerscienceandtechnologyinChina.
