Robotictechnology,inparticular,holdsmuchpromise,McAteersays,especiallywhenitcomestomappingminesandrescuingtrappedminers---thespecialoperationsoftheminingindustry.
OneofthefirstminingrobotswasdevelopedfiveyearsagoatCarnegieMellonUniversity’sRoboticsInstitute.ItwascalledGroundhog.Itusedlasers(激光器)to“see”indarktunnelsandmapabandonedmines—someofthemostdangerousworkinthebusiness.
