TothesurpriseofAndréaandhercolleagues,theteamrecordedatotalof203underwatervocalizationsfromthepenguinsintheunderwaterfootagetheycapturedoveramonth-longperiodin2019.Thesearethefirstrecordingsofseabirdsproducingvocalizationsunderwater.“Icouldn’tbelieveit.Ihadtoreplayitmanytimes,”Andréasaid.

Thevocalizationsthattheteamrecorded—whichsoundlikerapidwhoops—wereveryshortinduration,lastingabout0.06secondsonaverage.Andallofthesesoundswereemitted(发出)duringdivesinwhichtheanimalsweresearchingforfood.Currently,itisnotclearwhythepenguinsaremakingthesesounds;however,theyonlyproducethemwhilehunting.Infact,morethan50percentofthevocalizationswereimmediatelyprecededbyanaccelerationmovementorfollowedbyanattempttohunt.

Accordingtotheresearchers,thissuggeststhatthesoundsarerelatedtohuntingbehavior—especiallybecausethepenguinstendtobealonewhentheymakethem,indicatingthatcommunicationwasnotthepurpose.Theresearchersguessthatthepenguinsmaybeusingthevocalizationstostun(使昏迷)theirprey.However,muchmoreresearchisrequiredtodeterminewhythepenguinsmakethesesounds,thescientistsnote.
