We'vebeeninyourcountryonly5days,butalreadywe'veseenthewondersofalifetime--theGreatWallofChina,astructuresohugeandmarvelousthatitcanbeseenfromspace;theancientcityofXi'an;andtheTomboftheGreatEmperorandtheburiedarmythatguardshimstill.Thesearethewondersofagespast.ButtodayIwanttotalktoyou,theyoungpeopleofagreatuniversity,aboutthefuture,aboutourfuturetogetherandhowwecantransformhumanlifeonthisplanetifwebringasmuchwisdomandcuriositytoeachotheraswebringtoourscholarlypursuits.

Iwanttobegin,though,withsomegreetings.Ibringyougreetingsnotonlyfrommycountrymenbutfromoneofyourcountrymen.SomeofyouknowYeYang,whowasastudenthere.HegraduatedfromFudanandbecameateacherofEnglishatthisuniversity.NowheisatHarvardUniversityintheUnitedStates,whereheisstudyingforadoctorateincomparativeliterature.

Mystaffspoketohimbeforeweleft.Mr.Yewantsyoutoknowhe'sdoingfine.He'sworkinghardonhisspringtermpapers,andhisthoughtsturntoyouoften.Heaskedmetodeliveramessagetohisformerstudents,colleagues,friends,andfamily.Heaskedmetosayforhim,andIhopeIcan,``Woxiangniandajia''[Iamthinkingofallofyou].

HewantsyoutoknowthathelooksforwardtoreturningtoFudantoteach.AndPresidentXie,hesaidtotellyouhemissesyourfriendshipandencouragement.AndMr.Yesaysyouareaverygreatwomanandagreateducator.YouwillbeproudtoknowthathereceivedstraightA'slastterm.Andwhenwecongratulatedhim,hesaid,``Ihavenothingtobeproudofmyself;Iamsoproudofmyuniversity.''

I'dliketosayafewwordsaboutour.educationalexchangeprograms.It'snotentirelynew,thisexchangingofstudents.YourPresidentXieearnedadegreefromSmithCollegeintheUnitedStates.SmithisalsomywifeNancy'salmamater.AndPresidentXiealsoattendedMIT,MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,oneofourgreatestuniversitiesofscience,engineering,andtechnology.

Butinthepastfewyears,ourtwocountrieshaveenjoyedanexplosioninthenumberofstudentexchanges.Fiveyearsagoyounumberedyourstudentsstudyingabroadinthehundreds.Sincethen,20,000Chinesescholarshavestudiedthroughouttheworld,andmorethanhalfofthemhavecometoAmericanschools.Morethan100AmericancollegesanduniversitiesnowhaveeducationalexchangeswithnearlyasmanyChineseinstitutions.

WehavecommittedmoreresourcestoourFulbrightprograminChinathaninanyothercountry.TwooftheAmericanprofessorsteachinghereatFudanareFulbrightprofessors.Andthereare20Americanstudentsstudyingwithyou,andwe'reveryproudofthem.

AmericanstudentscometoChinatolearnmanythings--howyoumonitorandpredictearthquakes,howyou'vemadesuchstridesinresearchingthecauseandtreatmentofcancer.Wehavemuchtolearnfromyouinneurosurgeryandinyouruseofherbsinmedicine.Andwewelcomethechancetostudyyourlanguage,yourhistory,andyoursociety.

You,inturn,haveshownthatyou'reeagertolearn,tocometoAmericanschoolsandstudyelectronicsandcomputersciences,mathandengineering,physics,management,andthehumanities.Wehavemuchtoshareinthesefields,andwe'reeagertobenefitfromyourcuriosity.Muchofthissharingisrecent,only5yearsold.Buttheareasofourmutualcooperationcontinuetoexpand.We'vealreadyagreedtocooperatemorecloselyintrade,technology,investment,andexchangesofscientificandmanagerialexpertise.Andwehavejustconcludedanimportantagreementtohelpadvanceourtechnologicalandeconomicdevelopmentthroughthepeacefuluseofnuclearenergy.

Thatterm``peacefuluseofnuclearenergy''iskey.Ouragreementrestsuponimportantprinciplesofnonproliferation.Neitherofourcountrieswillencouragenuclearproliferationnorassistanyothercountrytoacquireordevelopanynuclearexplosivedevice.

Weliveinatroubledworld,andtheUnitedStatesandChina,astwogreatnations,shareaspecialresponsibilitytohelpreducetherisksofwar.Webothagreethattherecanbeonlyonesanepolicytopreserveourpreciouscivilizationinthismodernage:

Anuclearwarcannotbewonandmustneverbefought.Andnomatterhowgreattheobstaclesmayseem,wemustneverstopoureffortstoreducetheweaponsofwar.WemustneverstopatalluntilweseethedaywhennucleararmshavebeenbanishedfromthefaceofthisEarth.

Withpeacefulcooperationasourguide,thepossibilitiesforfutureprogressaregreat.Forexample,welookforwardtoexploringwithChinathepossibilitiesofcooperatinginthedevelopmentofspaceonbehalfofourfellowcitizens.

Ourastronautshavefoundthatbyworkinginthezerogravityenvironmentofspace,wewillbeabletomanufacturelife-savingmedicineswithfargreaterpurityandefficiency,medicinesthatwilltreatdiseasesofheartattackandstrokethatafflictmillionsofus.WewilllearnhowtomanufactureFactor8,arareandexpensivemedicineusedtotreathemophiliacs.WecanresearchtheBetaCell,whichproducesinsulin,andwhichcouldprovidemankind'sfirstpermanentcurefordiabetes.

Newsatellitescanbelaunchedforuseinnavigation,weatherforecasting,broadcasting,andcomputertechnology.Wealreadyhavethetechnologytomaketheextraordinarycommonplace.WehopetoseethedaywhenaChinesescientistworkingoutanengineeringprobleminFudanwillbeabletohookintothehelpofascientistatacomputeratMIT.AndthescientistinBostonwillbeabletocallontheexpertiseofthescientistinShanghai,andallofitinamatterofseconds.

Myyoungfriends,thisisthewayofthefuture.Bypoolingourtalentsandresources,wecanmakespaceanewfrontierofpeace.

Yourgovernment'spolicyofforgingclosertiesinthefreeexchangeofknowledgehasnotonlyenlivenedyoureconomy,ithasopenedthewaytoanewconvergenceofChineseandAmericaninterests.Youhaveopenedthedoor,andletmeassureyouthatoursisalsoopen.

Now,allofthisisparticularlyexcitinginlightoftherecenthistoryofourtwocountries.Formanyyears,therewasnoclosenessbetweenus.Thesilencetookitstoll.Adozenyearsago,itbegantochange.Together,wemadeitchange.Andnowinthepast5years,yourpolicyofopeningtotheoutsideworldhashelpedusbegintoknoweachotherbetterthanweeverhadbefore.

Butthatprocesshasjustbegun.TomanyAmericans,Chinaisstillafarawayplace,unknown,unseen,andfascinating.Andwearefascinated.[Laughter]

Iwonderifyou'reawareofthemanywaysChinahastouchedAmericanlifeThesignsofyourinfluenceandsuccessabound.IfIwerespendingthisafternooninWashington,ImightlookoutthewindowandseeamanandwomanstrollingalongPennsylvaniaAvenuewearingChinesesilk.TheymightbeontheirwaytoourNationalPortraitGallerytoseetheChineseartexhibit.Andfromthere,perhapstheywouldstrolltoourNationalGallerytoseethenewbuildingdesignedbytheChineseAmericanarchitect,.Pei.Afterthat,theymightendtheirdaydininginarestaurantthatservesChinesecuisine.[Laughter]

WeassociateChinawithvitality,enormousvitality,andsomethingthatdoesn'talwaysgoalongwiththat--subtlety,thesubtletyofdiscerningandintelligentminds.

PremierZhaosawsomethingoftheAmericanattitudetowardChinawhenhevisitedusinJanuary.HesaidafterafewdaysinourcountrythatheneverexpectedsuchprofoundfeelingsoffriendshipamongtheAmericanpeoplefortheChinesepeople.

Well,letmesay,I'mhappytoreturnthecompliment.IhavefoundthepeopleofChinatobejustaswarmandfriendlytowardus,andit'smadeusveryglad.

Butmeetingyouandtalkingtoyouhasonlymademewanttoknowmore.AndIsensethatyoufeelthesamewayaboutAmericans.You,too,wishtoknowmore.

Iwouldliketotellyousomethingaboutus,andalsosharesomethingofmyownvalues.

Firstofall,AmericaisreallymanyAmericas.Wecallourselvesanationofimmigrants,andthat'strulywhatweare.WehavedrawnpeoplefromeverycorneroftheEarth.We'recomposedofvirtuallyeveryraceandreligion,andnotinsmallnumbers,butlarge.WehaveastatueinNewYorkHarborthatspeaksofthis,astatueofawomanholdingatorchofwelcometothosewhoenterourcountrytobecomeAmericans.Shehasgreetedmillionsuponmillionsofimmigrantstoourcountry.Shewelcomesthemstill.Sherepresentsouropendoor.

Alloftheimmigrantswhocametousbroughttheirownmusic,literature,customs,andideas.Andthemarvelousthing,athingofwhichwe'reproud,istheydidnothavetorelinquishthesethingsinordertofitin.Infact,whattheybroughttoAmericabecameAmerican.Andthisdiversityhasmorethanenrichedus;ithasliterallyshapedus.

Thistradition--thetraditionofnewimmigrantsaddingtothesumtotalofwhatweare--isnotathingofthepast.NewimmigrantsarestillbringingtheirtalentsandimprovingthequalityofAmericanlife.Letmenameafew--Ithinkyou'llknowtheirnames.

InAmerica,Wangcomputershavebecomeafixtureinofficesthroughoutthecountry.TheyaretheproductoftheenergyandbrillianceofMr.AnWang,whohimselfistheproductofaShanghaiuniversity.

ThefacesofourcitiesshinewiththegleamingbuildingsofMr..Pei,whofirstbecameinterestedinarchitectureasastudenthereinShanghai.

WhatweknowoftheuniverseandthefundamentalnatureofmatterhasbeenexpandedbytheNobelPrizewinningscientist,Dr.LeeTsung-Dao,whowasborninShangha
