Nowadays,peoplehavelongdesiretobehappybyallmeans.Theywanttoobtainmorewealth,largerhouse,morelustandhighersocialstatusandreputation.Itseemsthattheywouldfeelmoresafeandhappieriftheygetthem.However,itisnotafactinreality.

Thepaperisdividedintofourparts,includingacknowledgement,abstract,contentsandbibliography.Throughtheanalysisofthefourmarriages,itshowsthatamarriageshouldbehighqualityandbebasisofthetruelove.

Theauthorof“PrideandPrejudice”isJaneAusten,afamousfemalewriter,inEngland.Thenovelreflectstheculturebetweenthelate18thcenturyandtheearly19thcentury.Atthattime,inEngland,theunmarriedwomanwasrespectable,fortheycouldearnmoneyandtheywereindependent.Butthemarriedwomenwerenot.Mentriedtheirbesttopreventwomenfromgoingoutworking.Intheiropinion,theresponsibilityofawomanwasdevotingherselftoherhusband,herchildren,herparentsandthewholefamilyandmakingherfamilycomfortable.Furthermore,womenshouldhaveself-discipline.Theyshouldstayathomeanddon’tshowtheiremotiondirectly.Evenwhentheywereinlove,theyshouldfeelworriedbutexcited.Inaword,women’sactionsandmannersweresetalimit.Soitwasofvitalimportanceforthemtohaveagoodmarriagebecausemarriagewastheonlywaytochangetheirconditionsintheirfamilies.Andiftheyhadagoodmarriage,theywouldhavetheeconomicsecurity.

Itisatruthwellknowntoalltheworldthatatanunmarriedaninpossessionofalargefortunemustbeinneedofawife.Elizabeth,JaneandLydiaarethreedaughtersofMrBennet.CharlotteidElizabeth’sneighborandclosefriend.DarcyisBingley’sbestfriendandgrowsupwithWickham.Theyhavedifferentcharacters.CollinsidMrBennet’snephewandwillinherithisproperty.HeproposestoElizabeth,butshedoesn’taccept.ThenheturnstoproposetoCharlotteatonce,andheidsuccessful.LydiaisonlypursuitofhandsomeandfinallysheelopeswithWickham.Jane,theoldestgirl,isattractiveandtemptsBingley.theyfallinlovewitheachother.MrDarcylovesElizabethdeeply,buthisprideandtheliefromWickham,abadperson,leadtoElizabeth’smisunderstandingandprejudice.ButBarcyhelpsLydiawiththeproblemsofelopement.Afterthetruthturnsup,DarcyandElizabethcomeoverthetrappleofprideandprejudiceandtheyaremarriedhappily.

2.1Therealisticmarriage---themarriageofMrCollinsandCharotteLucas

CharlitteLucas,theeldestdaughterofSirWilliamanLadyLucas,wastwenty-seven.Shewaslackofbeauty.Shedidnotthinkhighlyofmenorofmarriage.Shethoughtthatmarriagemightnotalwaysbringhappiness,anditwastheonlyhonorablewayinwhichawell-educatewomaneitherlittleincomecouldprovidealimeforherself.Soshefeltshewasluckytohavefoundahusband.WhatlikeElizabethdescribedwhenshevisitedher,“Charlottereallyappearedtobehappy,whenWrCollinscouldbeforgotten.Thehouseseemedverypleasantandcomfortable.”

Charlotte’sparentsweredelightedtoagreetothemarriage,andladyLucasbegantoworkout,withmoteinterestthanshehadeverfeltbefore,howmanymoreyearsMrBennetwaslikelytolive.ThewholefamilywereexcitednotforCharlotte’shappinessbutforhermarriage.

Fromthismarriage,wecanseethatMrCfollinsneedsawomanwhocantakecareofhimandthehouse,whileCharlotteneedsahusbandandacomfortablehouse.Thiskindofmarriageisverycommon.Propertyandstatusplayaveryimportantroleinthemarriage.

2.2TheAbsurdMarriage–TheMarriageofLydiaBennetandWickham

LydiaBennetwastheyoungestgirl.ShewasnotasgentleandbeautifulasJaneorassensibleandvelvetasElizabeth.Hermindwasmorevacantthanhersisters’.Ifnobetterentertainmentwasavailable,awalktoMerytonalwaysprovidedsomeamusement,aswellasinterestinglocalnewsfromheraunt.Whatshecoulddowastodanceandtoexpressheadmirationfortheofficials.

AstoWickham,hewasahandsomeandgentleman-likeyoungman.HisfatherworkedforDarcy’sfatherformanyyears.Darcy’sfatherpaidforhimtogotoschoolanduniversity,buthewasinfectedbybadhabitsandlackofmorals.HehadeverflatteredDarcy’ssister,fifteen-year-old,somuchthatshebelievedshewasinlove,andagreedtoelopewithhim.Thatisbecauseshehadthirtythousandpoundfortune.Luckily,itwasunsuccessful.

Lydiawasinpursuitofvanityandenjoyment.ShelikedWickham’sappearance.WhileWickhamagreestomarryLydiabecauseDarcypaidhimseveralthousandpoundstopayforpastdebtsandfutureexpense.Atthesametime,MrBennetwasaskedtopayLydiaonehundredpoundsayear,aswellasarrangingforhertoinheritequalshareofthefivethousandpoundswhichtheBennetgirlscouldinheritaftertheirparents’death.Attheendofnovel,LydiaandWickhamwerealwaysfromoneplacetoanotherinsearchofcheaprooms,andalwaysspendingmorethantheyshould.Hisaffectionforhersoonbecameindifferent,whilehersforhimlastedalittlelonger.ElizabethandJanehadsentthemregulargiftsofmoneytopaytheirbills.Theirmarriagewasdependentinthelustwithoutlove.NotlikeCharlotte,LydiahadnopracticalpurposetomarryWichham,andshealsocouldgetnothingexceptthehardtimetoborrowmoney.

 

2.3Thehappymarriage---themarriageofJaneBennetandBingely

Jane’smarriagewaslikeazigzaggingroad.Atfirst,Jane’smodestandcautionbecamethebarrierstohermarriage.Onthefirstdancingparty,BingleyexpressedhisadmirationforJaneandJanealsolikehim.Nevertheless,Janebehavedsocheerfullyandnormally.Charlottehadeversaid,Ifshedoesn’tshowherfeelingsatall,eventothemanshelives,shemaylosetheopportunityofcatchinghim.Asaresult,Darcyhadasenseofmisunderstanding.HewascarefultoobserveJaneclosely,andashermannersandappearancewereaspleasantandcheerfulasever.Heconvincedthatshedidn’tindifferencetohimandnottoreturnHertgordshire.Atthattime,Janenearlylostherhappiness.
