Andersen's tales haveattractedmillionsof readersfor morethana century.Theycontinueto beamongthebest-known worksofworldliterature. "TheUglyDuckling(小鸭)" and"TheLittleMermaid(美人鱼)" are amongthe most famous.
HewasbornonApril2,1805,intheslumsofOdense, Denmark.His fatherwasa shoemakerandhis motherworked asawasher-woman. Andersenreceivedverylittleeducation,buthis fascinationwithfairytales inspired him tocomposehisownstories andarrangepuppet(木偶) shows.
Hisfatherdiedwhenhe was11.Hewasforcedtogotowork, first asan apprenticetoa weaverandtailorandthenin atobaccofactory.Attheage of 14, hemovedto Copenhagentotrya careeras asinger, dancerandactor. He sanginaboy'schoir(合唱团), buthe madeverylittlemoney.Healsotriedtheballet,buthisawkwardnessmade thisimpossible.
Finally, whenhewas 17,JonasCollin,adirectoroftheRoyal Theatrein
CopenhagendiscoveredAndersen.AfterhearingAndersenreadaplay,Collinrealizedthat hehadtalent.And hegotmoneyfrom thekingfor Andersen'seducation.
In 1828,Andersenpassedtheentrance examinationsto the universityin
Copenhagen.Hiswritingswerefirstpublishedin1829. In1833,hereceivedgrantmoney for travel,whichhe usedtovisitGermany,France,Switzerland,andItaly.These journeyswererecordedinhistravelogues(旅行见闻). In1835,Andersenpublished "Fairy Tales for Children,"which containedfourshort stories.Heeventually wrotearound 168fairytales.Theyachievedsuccessinhislife-time andwerewidelypublished andtranslated.
Unhappinessalso found its wayintomanyofhis taleswhichwere notmeantmerelyfor childrenbutforadultsaswell.Heusedverysimplelanguageandstyle todisguisethe moralteachingsofhistales.
Andersenalsowrote novels,playsandpoems. Hediedat hishomein RolighedonAugust4,1875.
