Preface

Thisessayprojectisdesignedtofindanovelandusefulreadingmethodswhichcouldbeofgreathelpfultoseniormiddleschoolstudents.Inmyformerperiodofteachingreading,Ilearnedafewtricksthatmademesoundlikeateacherofreadingsomeofthetime,butIwasstillmostlyconfusedandmystifiedandfullofquestionsabouthowtoteachreading.SoafterlearninginGuanganTVUniversity,ImadeadeterminationtodosomeresearchonEnglishreading.

Here,Iamverymuchobligedtomytutorforhiscontributiontomyresearchandsupportandguidanceontheproject.Ireallyappreciatehisusefuladvicegivenontheproject.FinallyIamgratefultoallmystudentswhoareinparticipationofmystudyactivelyandhelpmerecordsomedata.

 

Abstract

TheEnglishreadingskillteachinginthemiddleschoolisanindispensablepartofEnglishcurriculum.JustasafamouslinguistWilkinssaid,“Withoutgrammarverylittlecanbeconveyed,withoutreadingnothingcanbeconveyed.”ThewriterfoundmanydrawbacksinthetraditionalEnglishteachingthroughtheteachingpractice,forexample,neglectingthescientificrulesofstudy,etc.Inordertoimprovetheproblem,thewriterhasdonesomeresearchindifferentwaysandputthemintopracticeinclassteaching.Itprovesthatitisveryusefultousedifferentvisualprops,guessingthemeaningofthewordsandplayinggamestostimulatestudents'interests.ItwillhelpstudentstoovercometheiranxietyandavoidtheunfavorableaffectionfrommothertongueandstimulatetheirmotivesofstudyingEnglish.IthasbeenadoptedandprovedtobeeffectiveinhowtoreadingEnglishpaper.

1.Introduction

Grammarprovidestheoverallpatterns,andreadingisthematerialtounderstandthispatterns.Withoutgrammarwecanconveyalittle,butwithoutreadingwecanconveynothing.Inthemiddleschool,manystudentsdevotelargeamountsoftimeandenergytothelearningofvocabulary,buttheystillcomplainthattheirreadingskillisnotlargeenoughtoimproveortheycannotunderstand.Itisveryimportanttomakestudentsawarenotallwordsareequallyimportantandthateffectivewayofformingreadingskillshelptoreducemisunderstanding.teachinghowtoreadisanindispensablepartofEnglishcurriculum.However,Englishteacherssometimeshavetendencytooverlooktheimportanceofteachinghowtoread.Thisisespeciallyobviousinthemiddleschool.Itisnecessaryfortheteachertoknowtheimportanceofteachinghowtoreadinthemiddleschool.

Asweentertheeraofknowledgeeconomy.Itisclearthatthereisanincreasingdemandforpeopleequippedwithmasteryofscienceandtechnology,especiallyforthosewhohavestrongcommunicationskills.TheeighthBasicEducationReformiscomingintobeingunderthisopportunity.Asaninternationalcommunicationtool,Englishisnaturallythefocusofthereform.Beingacomprehensivecompetence,Englishreadinghaveahigherrequestforseniorstudentsinallaspectssuchasvocabulary,grammarandlanguageskills.Accordingtomysurvey,thereisstillagapbetweentheactualsituationofhighschoolreadingandtherequirementsofnewcurriculumreleasedlately.Sowecanseetheprojectofimprovinghighschoolreadingisworthresearching.

Therearemanykindsofcausesofthissituation,inadditiontoEnglishas“foreignlanguage”,theunchangeableobjectivereason,Ibelievethatthefollowingreasonsplayedasignificantrole.

(1).Misunderstandingonthelanguageability

Sincethecommunicationabilitywasproposedbysomeexperts,whatthestudentsandteacherscomeintotheirmindsisoralskillatthementionofcommunication.Sointhepast,wegenerallybelievedthatagoodlessonshouldbecapaciousandprofuseinwhichstudentscantakeanactiveparticipation.Soitseemsthatmostofthemputemphasisonspeakingandletouttheimportanceofreadingwhichisequallynecessary.

(2).MisleadingofcollegeentranceexaminationorothervariousEnglishtest.

ThemajorityofEnglishteachersinhighschoolconsiderthecollegeentranceexaminationtobetheobjectivesandcriteria.However,beingaffectedbyrealitythatthescoresoftheobjectivepartarefarmorethanthatofthesubjectiveoneinthestandardizedentrancetest,otherkindsofEnglishtestsgivetheirprioritiestosubjectivequestions,suchasTOEFforexample.Englishtestofthiskindhavedeviatedfromtheoriginalpurposeoflanguagestudy,beencontrarytotheintentoflanguagelearning,resultinginthepoorreadingabilityofstudentsunderthesituation.

Accordingtomysurveyandcommunicationwithmystudents,IfindthemajorproblemslyinginEnglishreadingareasfollows:

(1).Overallappearanceofthepaper

Thisisperhapsthemostbasicproblem.Whentakinganexam,moststudentsdonotpaymuchattentiontotheneatnessoftheirpapers.Problemssuchaschaoticalterationwithcorrectionfluidortapepaper,abuseofpunctuationandwords-spellingerrorscanbeseenhereandthere.

(2).Vocabulary、grammarandlanguagelogic

Manystudentshaveonlyapoorvocabulary,theycannotevenremembermostbasicwordsandphrasessothatitisquitehardforthemtotranslateChinesesentencecanintoEnglishversion.Usuallytheymakeasentencewithoutpredicateorobjectlackingunityandlogicwhichispuzzlingforotherstounderstand.Theirsentencesareoftenstructuredmechanicallybyafewsimplewordsorphrasesandfewadvancedvocabularyandcomplexsentenceifever.Thereforetheycanjustgetverylowgradesfortheircompositions.

(3).Lowenthusiasmandinterest

Asweknow,theprimaryaspectofreadingisinterestwhichisthedrivingforceoflearningconsciouslyandeffectively.Intoday’sseniorschools,manystudentsarenotenthusiasticaboutEnglishreading.Mostofthemsurveyedsaidtheyjustcannotfindtheproperandexactwordsandphrasestodescribetheirmindsanditwasanevenmoredifficultjobforthemtowritedownnativeandexcellentsentences.Thisphenomenonleddirectlytounwillingnessanddisabilityofreading.

3.Problemanalysis

3.1TheWaysOfReadingWeUsuallyUse

Thissectionattemptstoclarifysomemisunderstandingsaboutthenatureofreading.Ifastudentfailstounderstandthenatureofreading,itisverylikelythatheorshemayadoptinappropriateandineffectivereadingstrategies,ifateacherfailstodoso,heorshewillnotbeabletohelphisorherstudenttobecomeefficientreaders.Inourlife,weoftenchoosereadingaloudandsilentreading,thesearetwotypesofreadingpracticecommonlyfoundinclassroom.Aretheythesameordifferent?

Readingaloudandsilentreadingaretwodifferenttypesofreadingpractice.Eachhasafunctionintheteachingofreadingandshouldnotbereplacedbytheother.However,weneedtobeawarewhenweshouldusethem.Whenwetalkaboutteachingreadingordevelopingreadingskills,wearemostlyreferringtosilentreading.Todevelopproficiencereadersinaforeignlanguage,silentreadingactivitiesmustbegivenenoughattentionandtimeinclasswiththeproperguidancefromtheteacher.ReadingaloudalsohasitsparticularvalueforourstudentswhoarelearningEnglishasaforeignlanguage.Itcanhelpthemacquiregoodpronunciationandintonation,familiarizethemwithnewwordsandthestresspatternsofEnglish,helpbuilduptheirconfidenceinspeakingthelanguage.Therefore,opportunitiesshouldbeavailableforstudentstopra
