Beforeendeavoringtolearnwhatiscommonlyknownas“BusinessEnglish”,itisnecessarytounderstandbasicEnglish.ManyChinesepeoplecometomeandtellmethey“Just”wanttolearnbusinessEnglish.Theytellmetheydon’twanttowastetheirtimelearning“commonEnglish”.IalwaysasksuchpeopleiftheyreallyknowwhatbusinessEnglishentails?
BusinessEnglishissimplyasetofEnglishvocabularywords,itisnotassomeseemtothinkalanguageuntoitself.Neitherisitsomethingusedexclusivelybybusinesspeople.
TheonlywaytolearngoodbusinessEnglishistofirstlearngoodEnglish.WithagoodcommandofEnglishandanabilitytothinkcreativelyinEnglish,learningthespecificsetofvocabularywordsthatpertaintoone’sbusinessbecomesasimpletask.WithoutsuchproficiencyinbasicandintermediateEnglish,itisimpossibletofunctioneffectivelyinanEnglishbusinessenvironment.
Ibelievethatdevelopingone’scomprehensionofhumannaturesimultaneouslydevelopsone’sfacultyforusingEnglishinordertogainwhateverendsonedesires.Ifonecanthinkclearly,creativelyandrationally,onecanexpressoneselfinlikemanner.Thus,thesinglemostcrucialaspectofusingwordseffectivelyisthedevelopmentofagreatercapacitytounderstandtheworldinwhichweliveandthepeoplewithwhomwemustcommunicate.

2)In1978,withtwothousandfivehundredN.T.IopenedalanguagecenterinTaipei,Ididthisbyrentingatelephoneandsomespaceinthecornerofasmalloffice.Withintwomonths,Ihadenoughteachersandstudentstoexpandintofiveclassrooms.Inlessthanthreemonths,withatwenty-fivehundredN.T.investment,IhadmadetwohundredthousandN.T.
YoumayaskyourselfhowIstartedtwolanguagecenterswithsolittlecapital?
Iknowthebusinessoflanguagecenters.Ialsohaveaspecialtalentfordraftingsuccessfuladvertisements.

Firstly,becauseI.C.R.T.hasagoodreputationforstandardEnglish.SecondlybecauseIamtellingpeoplesomeonewillpersonallyteachthem---someonewhowellrespected.Thirdly,because“Pureservice”soundsverygood----fivehundredN.T.isquitereasonable.
