LuXunisoneofthegreatestChinesewritersofthe20th century.Besideshisfamousstories,healsowrotemanyinfluentialarticlesaboutthelivingconditionsofChinesepeople.
Bornin1881toawealthyfamily,LuXunhadahappychildhood.In1893,however,hisgrandfather,asenior government official,wasputintoprisonfortakingmoney.Atthesametime,hisfatherbecameseriouslyill.Fromthattimeon,hisfamilywerenolongeracceptedbytheirrelativesandfriends.Theseearlyexperiencesgreatlyinfluencedhiswriting.
BythetimeLuXunarrivedinNanjingtostudyatuniversityin1899,healreadybelievedthatChinesesocietyhadtochangeandbecomemodern.In1902hewenttostudyinJapan.There,hebeganwritingarticlesforseveralChinesestudentmagazines.Heshowedagiftforwritingandtranslatingandevenwroteseveralbooks,althoughnonewaspopular.HereturnedtoChinain1909becausehewasinneedofmoney.
AfterworkingforseveralyearsasateacherinBeijing,LuXunagainreturnedtowriting.In1918,hewrotehisfamousshortstory DiaryofaMadman. ItwasthefirstChinesenovelpublishedusingtheeverydaylanguagethatpeoplespoke,whichhelpedmakeitagreatsuccess. This, togetherwithhisnovel TheTrueStoryofAhQ (1921), madeLuXunaleadingChinesewriter.
Althoughsuccessful,LuXun stillworriedgreatlyaboutChina’sfuture.In1926,hemovedtoShanghaiandgaveupwriting stories inordertodevotehimselftowhathecalled “penwarfare”.Henowonlywrotearticleswhichcalledonthepeopletofightagainstthegovernment.Forthis,thegovernmentstoppedhimfrompublishinganymorebooks.
