VanGoghpaintedsunflowersforthefirsttimeinthesummerof1886.Twoyearslater,hisinterestappearedagainafterhesettledinArles.AfterhehadinvitedtheFrenchartistPaulGauguin,whomheadmired,tojoinhisStudiooftheSouth,hebeganpaintingsunflowerstobrightenupthewhitewashedwallsoftheyellowhousehewaslivingin,notfarfromthetown’srailwaystation.

GauguinacceptedVanGogh’sinvitation.Whenhebegandragginghisheels(脚后跟),VanGoghpaintedthelasttwoofthefouroriginalSunflowersforthemodestbedroomwherehisguestwouldsleepfollowinghisarrivalthatautumn,“VanGoghsawtheSunflowersforGauguin’sbedroomasawayofattractinghisfriendtocomefromBrittany,“saysBailey.
