DombeyandSonisacriticalrealismnovel,knownas"themostpowerfulnovel"ofCharlesDickens.ThisarticlestartsfromCharlesDickens'snovelDombeyandSon,andexplorestheBritishsocialandculturaldevelopment.CombiningthetimebackgroundandthecurrentstatusofBritishsociety,itanalyzesthereasonwhytherearesomanysocialandculturalproblems.ThroughDombeyandSon,let’sseewheretheBritishsocialandculturaldevelopmentshouldgo,onthebasisofplotreproduction.Expoundingthesocialexistencedeterminessocialconsciousness,socialconsciousnesshasacounteractiveeffectonthesocialexistence.TokeepthedevelopmentofBritishsocietyhealthyandstable,goodsocialculturecanneverbeabsent.AndthenthepowerfulcarrierofBritishcultureliesin“people-oriented”,buildingthefoundationofculturalpowerliesin"facingtheproblem",finallyputtingforwardtheimportantpropositions“educationisthefoundation”.

Theworldtodayisundergoingextensiveandprofoundchanges,thedevelopmentofBritainisfacingunprecedentedopportunities,aswellasunprecedentedchallenges,buttherearemoreopportunitiesthanchallenges.Facingwithmorewhitewaterrapids,dealingwithmorerisksandchallenges,tolet"theBritish"shipcleavethroughthewaves,singforward,wemustestablishthesocialandculturaldevelopmentroadwithBritishcharacteristicandalwaysadheretotheorientationofadvancedculture,andgivefullplaytotheroleofsocialandculturaldynamic.

VictorianBritainisalsoinaneraofchange,thesocialandculturalproblemsitreflectedalsoapplyequallytothecontemporaryBritishsociety.

II.BackgroundInformation

2.1TimeBackground

CharlesDickenswasbornintheVictorianperiod.TheVictorianperiodwasaneraofchange.Inthethirtyorfortyyearsofthenineteenthcentury,astheindustrialrevolutionhasinfiltratedeveryaspectofBritishsociety,greatchangesalsohadtakenplaceinpolitic,economyandculture.

Politically,thecontradictionbetweentheemergingclassandtheoldpowerwasweakening,thestruggleoftheworkingclassandthebourgeoisiewasbecomingthemaincontradictionofBritishsociety.Thesocialwealthwasincreasing,butthepeoplewerestilllivinginhardship.Representedbytheworkers,theChartistMovementroseoneafteranother,whichcauseddissatisfactionofeachsocialstrata.Britainisin“theearlystageofstorm”.

Economically,Britainhasaccumulatedalotofwealthinthewayofdevelopingoverseasmarketandcolonialexploitation,andprimitiveaccumulationofcapitalreacheditspeakperiod.Meanwhile,avarietyofscientificinventionsandtechnologyinnovationhasbroughtthenewbloodtotheBritisheconomy,suchastrains,steamship,printingmachine,textilemachineandsoon.Theimportandexporttradedevelopedgreatly,Britainoncehasbeencalledthe"worldfactory".

2.2CurrentSocialSituation

Intoday’sworld,withthefurtherdevelopmentofeconomicglobalization,Britishsocietyhasbeenundergoingextensiveandprofoundchanges.Economically,theUnitedKingdomisstilltheleaderincapitalistsociety,butbecauseofthefinancialcrisis,theUKeconomyremainsindownturn,thegrowthrateofGDPinthesecondquarterof2011wasonly0.2%.Inresponsetotheeconomicdownturn,theBritishgovernmenttookausteritymeasures,ignoredthepeople.Accordingtoofficialstatistics,theUnitedKingdom,about1millionyouthsfrom16to24areunemployed,usheredinthehighestrecordsincethemiddle1980sthegreatrecession.Alotofpeopleliveonunemploymentbenefits,livingstandardscanonlybemaintainedatthelowestline,childrenreceiveeducationinfreepublicschools,collegeentrancerateisfarlowerthantheprivateschools.Manypeoplearelookingforjobsaftergraduatingfromhighschool,butdozensofresumesmaynotbeabletoreceiveareply.

So,theunemployed,lostgeneration,whatdidtheydo?

TheBritishriotsemergedasthetimerequired.Evenseven-year-oldchildrenjoinedthelootingteam.ThewantontroubleteensnotonlyenjoyedshowingoffthecrimescenephotosonTwitterandFacebook,butalsothroughBlackberrycontactedwitheachotherandinformedthepotentiallootingsite,allofwhichareincitingmorepeopletojointhelooterteam.TheGuardian,TheIrishTimesandothermediaaretryingtowakeupBritish.ThearticlepublishedinTheIrishTimes,reporterCarolinathinks,asmoreandmorepeopleinvolvedintheriot,theothersalsotriedtojointhem,andbelievedinthemselvesbutoneseamillet,theywereunlikelytobecapturedorfacepunishment.

Thefurtherdevelopmentofcapitalism,notonlydoesnotsolvetheoriginalsocialandculturalissues,butalsogivesrisetomorecorruptionthoughts,suchasopportunism,individualism,hedonismandliberalism,etc.Inthematerialcapitalistsociety,wedonotseektoleavetheworld,butwejustwantnottobecold-hearted.Wedonotseekforperfection,butwejustpursuetherightthings.Buthowtokeepourownheartandeliminateself-lostfundamentally,weshouldvigorouslydevelopadvancedculture,spreadadvancedideas,andcultivatenoblemanideologyandmorality.
