Belowisthefirstphaseofmytexturing-astepIdothesamenomatterwhatkindoftextureI'mcreating.Thestartingformatisoneblackbackgroundlayer,onecrimsonredlayer,theUVlayoutofthegeometry,andmydarkmarkinglinesona4thlayer.
Whenpaintingalivehumanskin,Ialwaysbeginwithabaselayerofcrimsonredasaquickrepresentationofthebloodbeneath.AsIbuildcolorlayersontopofthis,Ifeelthattheredalwaysshinesthrough,evenifverylittle,givingskinaplushcoloration.90%oftexturecreationrestsin'nailing'thecolors,andthisstepseemstoalwayshelpmegetthere.
IusetheoverlaidUVlayoutasaguideformydark(neverblack,alwaysdarkdarkblue)guidelineswhichshowmewherethelandmarksofthefaceare.It'saprocessoftrialanderror-repeatedlycheckingthelayoutofthelinesonthemodeluntilIfeeltheyprovideasolidstructureformetomoveforward.Thisparticularcasetookmeahandfuloftimestogetright.
Iusuallymarksectionsofthefacewithlines,andareasthat'llreceivelightertintswithaclosedshape.

Thisstagerequiredtheleastamountofthought,asallthethinkinghadalreadybeendone(drawinglinesontheface).AllIdidherewasmakeacoupleskintoneswatches(amidandlighttone),andpaintontopofmy'blood'layer.I'mnowgoingtorefertothatlayerasthe'baselayer'fromhereonout.
Asyoucansee,thecrimsonisstillshowingthrough;more-soincertainplaces.SomethingtorememberaboutworkingatextureinPhotoshopisthatitcanalwaysbechanged.Thesecolorchoicesaren'tbindinginanyway-allchangingcolorrequiresisasimpleplaywiththehueslider.
'Ballpark'nitworks.
Afterthecolorwaslaiddown,Ismootheditoverwiththesmudgetool.Inthiscase,togetatruesmudge,Iwentinto'Brushes'-->'ShapeDynamics',andunchecked'Spacing.'Thismakestheblendtoolblend,insteadofpushingcoloraroundonthecanvas(easieronyourcomputeraswell).Albeit,keeping'Spacing'onhasitsuses,butnotinthisstageofthegame.
Continuingworkonthebaselayer,Istayedwithinthesamecolors,andpaintedupformsalittlebit-mainlyonthelighterendofthespectrum.Thegoalfromhereonoutwastokeepdefiningandrefining.Sotherewasalotofpainting,andjustasmuchsmudgingwith'Spacing'turnedon,toeasilypushformsaround.
Ihavebroughtoutthecranium,anddefinedthejawlineabitmore.TheSCMmuscleoftheneck(sideoftheneck)washitwiththelighterskintone,asthatisamajorlandmarkoftheneck.
Theupperandlowereyelidswerequicklydefinedbyrunningthelighterskintoneoverthem.Alsobroughtoutanotherareaofimportance-thefoldofskinontheupper/outsideoftheeye,wheretheeyesocketoftheskullrecedesbackinspace.
Thebridge,tip,andsidesofthenosewerebroughtoutwiththelighterskintoneaswell.Onthispart,Iwantedtobeginthatsenseofskinbeingwrappeddirectlyoverbone,whichiswhyIhaveleftthesideofthebridgerelativelydarkerthantherestofthenose.Thenotsrilwasquicklytaggedwithadark'rose'color.
Aquicknoteaboutthe'rose'colorofthenostril:
adominantthemeinmytexturecreationistotryandkeepeverythingrelative.Forinstance,Ididn'tchoosethe'rose'colorbygrabbingacolorfrommyswatchpalletteandadjustingfromthere.Instead,Ieyedroppedthepinkfromtheundersideofthenose,broughtthevalueandsaturationdown,andadjustedslightlytohighermagentaonthehueslider.
Itrynottointroducetoomanybrandnewthingstomytextures,asitmakesminelookveryrandom.
Continuingworkonthebaselayer,Idecidedtheoverallappearancewasgettingtoolightinvalue,soIgaveitalittlemorebasebyslidingthemiddlehandletotherightinthe'Levels'window.
'Definingandrefining'wasstillmytoppriorityatthisstage.Ibeganbringingoutmorelandmarksoftheskull.Usingthe'PolygonalLasso'toolwithfeatheringsetto4,Imadeaselectionwheretheeyesocketoftheskullis.Whilethisportionofthebaselayerwasselected,Iran'Image'-->'Adjustments'-->'Hue/Saturation',slidthehueallthewaytocyan,anddarkeneditabit.Immediatelyafterwards,Iwentto'Edit'-->'FadeHue/Saturation',settheblendingmodeto'multiply'atabout5%.Thiswholeprocessdarkenedtheeyesocketareaalittle,andmovedtheoverallhuerelativelytoahigheramountofblue.
Tofurtherbringouttheeyelidsandthebagundertheeyes,Iselectedthemeanofthenewlycreatedblue'ishskintone,ranthevaluesliderclosertoblack,andsketchedthemin.Togetthelightercoloratthetopofthebottomeyelid,Iselectedthesamemeancolor,ranthevaluesliderclosertowhite,uppedsaturation,andranthehueslidertowardsmagenta.
Theeyesocketwasdefinedmorebypaintingadarkskintonestreakatthe'5o'clock'positionofthesocket.
Iquicklylandmarkedthenostrilandtopofthechinbyselectingthoseareaswiththepolygonallassotool(nofeathering).Oncethosewereselected,Iusedthesmudgetooltopushthecolortotheborderoftheselection(outsideofnostrils,topofchin).Inversingtheselection,anddoingthesamewasdoneaswell.ThepurposeofthiswastogetclearlydefinedareasthatIcaneasilyseewhiletakingthetextureforward.
SmudgingcoloraroundwasdoneasIsawfit,tofurtherbringoutandenhancefacialfeatureshapes.
Continuingworkonthebaselayer,Idecidedtheoverallappearancewasgettingtoopinkinhue.Toremedythis,Iwentintothe'hue/saturation'windowandslidthehuebarclosertoyellow.
TheearwasquicklydefinedbyusingthesamelightanddarkskintonesIstartedthetexturewith.Theseinitialhuesaremoretothemagentaendofthespectrum,andsinceIjustranthebaselayerclosertoyellow,itwillmakeforsomesubtlevariation.
Otherareasofthetexturewerelightenedbyusingthelightskintone-mainlyonthejawlineandeyesockets.Thejawwasreadingastoodarkandsaturated(probablyfromthepreviouslevelsadjustment),andtheeyewasreadinglikemydudejustgotdealta'shiner.'Theseareaswerepaintedoverwiththeairbrushsettoalow(5-10%)opacity,astoallowoldcolortoshowthroughformorerichness.
Aftersteppingbackfromthemonitorandnoticingthatthetexturewasconsistingpredominantlyofredsandyellows,Idecidedtobrieflystrayfromkeepingitrelative.Iranupalightolivegreencolor,andbeganaddingittosomeoftherecededareas,usingtheairbrushsettoalowopactiy,andblendingitinfurtherwiththesmudgetoolafterwards.Areastonotearethejaw,thefrontoftheneck,thebaseoftheskullatthebackofthehead,theinnerear,underthecenterofthenose,underthebrowbetweentheeyesoketandnose,thenostril,andjustoverthetopoftheuppereyelid.
Thelipsreceivedabitmoreattention:
Idefinedthebottomofthelowerlipwithastrokeofthelightskintone.Thesamewasdonetothetopoftheupperlip,todefinewherethatformchangescurvefromtheliptotheface.
AnewlayerwasmadeontopofthebaselayerIhadbeenworkingon!
Withthepolygonallassotool(nofeathering),Ioutlinedtheshapeoftheupperlipandfilledit100%opacitywithadarkandsaturatedred.Thislayerwassettomultiply,andtheopacityofthelayersetverylow,astojustslightlydarkentheupperliptogivetheillusionthatitrecedesintothemouth.Thisalsomakesahandyselectionlayerforlateron,incaseyouaredoingworkaroundtheupperlipanddon'twanttoeffectit(inverseselection!

Theinsideofthenostrilwaspaintedupabitwiththelightskintone,tomakeitappearthatitrecedesupintotheskull.
FurthersmudgingwasdoneoverthewholetexturetofurtherenhanceformasIsawfit.
ThefirststepImadeherewastocreateasubtleoverlaylayerontheverytopofthelayerstack.Thislayerisnothingmorethananevengrainlayer,meanttolendasubtlesenseoftactility,andbreak-upthe'toosmooth'lookofstraightpainting.Ifcoloristhe'cake'ofcreatingabelieveablesurface,surfacedetailiswhatmakesthe'icing'.
Themethodforcreatingthislayerisrealsimple.Makealayerontopofeverything,andfillit100%withagray.Runa'filter'-->''noise'-->'addnoise.'Isetmyoptionsto'Gaussian'and'monochrome.'Theblendingmodeofthislayerwassettooverlay,andIdialedthelayer'sopacitydownintheneighborhoodof5%.
Next,Iwantedtostartbringinginsomemorecolortotheface.Idecidedtostartwithalittleredinthecheeksandnose.Icreatedalayeroverthebaselayer,andpaintedadarkredoverthecheeksandnoseat100%opacity.Aftersmudgingitaroundinthoseareasforashortwhile,Isetthelayerblendmodeto'softlight',anddialeddownthelayeropacitytosomewherearound8%.Keepingelementslikethisonseperate(butmanageable)layersallowsforeasyadjustmentsdowntheroad.
Onthatsamenote,Ididtheexactsamethingwiththeforehead;exceptpaintedamustardyellowinsteadofadarkred.
