TheManWhoWroteHisOwnObituary

Cigaretteswerethedeathofme.IbecameacquaintedwithmykillerwhenIwas14andbeganstealingseveraladayfrommyfather’spack.Smokingcausedsomenauseaatfirst,butpersistenceconquered.IwasborninDavenport,Iowa,onJune2,1909.At16,Imovedwithmyfamily,includingtwosisters,toBaltimore,acitythatIlovedandadoptedasmyhometown.Itwasstillnoproblemgettingcigarettes.Igotoddjobsafterschooltobuythem,andtriedallsortsofbrands,suchasMelachrinos,OmarsandEnglishOvals.Ifeltquitesophisticated,butIcan’trecallnowthatIenjoyedsmokingthem.

In1928,thecomingdepressioncastitsshadow.Withmoneyscarce,

 myfatherbegancountinghisCamels,soafriendandItooktopickingbuttsoffthestreet.Wetoastedthetobaccoinanovenandrolleditintorice-papercigarettes.Theywerehorrible.Jobsforyouthwerehardtofind,soIdecidedtojointheNavy---amouthremovedformthetable,andIcouldsendmoneyhome.Nowcigaretteswereonproblem.Ifyouwereatsea,theywere4centsapack.Ismokedtwopacksaday,drawinginmostofthesmoke.Whenmy20-yearNavycareerended,IwenttotheUniversityofNorthCarolina.AfterIgraduatedIgotajobinSanDiego.

Onenight,whilewalkingtomycar,Ihadaslightstrokeandstaggeredtotheleft.Ihadbeensmokingonecigaretteafteranotherthatnight,andIfeltthatthatwaswhatcausedit.Mywife,Muriel,andItriedtoquit.Welastedeightdays.Itwasn’tthatIgotanyrealpleasureoutofsmoking.Exceptforthefirstcigaretteinthemorningwithmycoffee,Ineverenjoyedit.Mymouthalwaystastednasty.Smokingtookawaymyappetite.Itbroughtonemphysemathatmadeithardtobreathe.In1956,smokingmorethanever,IcametoHonolulutoworkforalocalnewspaper.InJune1965mystomachbeganhurting,andIwouldgetupeveryhourorhalfhourduringthenighttodrinkmilkandsmokeacigarette.InSeptember1965Icamedownwithahorriblecough.Iwashoarse,andtherewasanastysorenessinmyleftlung.Iwenttomydoctor.HelistenedtomychestandorderedanX-ray.“Youhavealungtumor,”hesaid.Fourdayslater,thelungsurgeontookoutaleftlobe.Amonthlater,Iwasbackatwork.I hadn’tsmokedsincethedaybeforemyoperation.Itwasn’thardtoquit-----foronesimplereason.Motivation.

Icamealongfine,gainedtenpoundsandreallyfeltgood.Then,onJanuary3,IthoughtIhadcaughtacold.Iwenttomysurgeon,whotappedaquartoffluidfrommyleftchestcavity.Iwentbackseveraltimes,andmysurgeonsaid,“Thetimeisdrawingcloser.”Later,mywifetoldmehehadtoldheraftertheoperationthatIhadlessthanayeartolive.Butshewouldn’tbelieveit,andshedidn’ttellme.Ifindnofaultwiththat.Therearefourcelltypesoflungcancer.Thetypeseemstohavealottodowithitsrateofgrowth.Mydoctortoldmethis;healsosaidthatoutofevery20lung-cancercasesonlyonesurvives.Theother19die.That’sthesurvivalrateforlungcancer,takingintoconsiderationallavailableformsoftreatment.Thereisno50-50chance---thefigureforothercancers----forthistypeofcancer.

Mydoctorisenthusiasticaboutgettingpeopletoquitcigarettes.Hesaysthatthere’snoquestionoftherelationshipbetweencigarettesmokingandlungcancer.Thestatisticsareoverwhelming.Itisestimatedthatoneineveryeightmaleswhohavebeensmokingheavily(20cigarettesormoreaday)for20yearsgetslungcancer.Thebadeffectofcigarettesdoesn’tendwithlungcancer.Smokingdoublesthechancesofdeathfromheartdisease,andthechancesofdyingfromemphysemaare12timesgreater.Ithinkdoctorsgettofeelingprettyhelplessattimes.Theywarnpeoplelikeme,butalltheirwarningsgounheeded.
