  Theersatz(假的)newsstorywaswrittenbyLosAlamosNationalLaboratoryphysicistMarkBosloughtoparody(滑稽地模仿)legislativeandschoolboardattacksontheteachingofevolutioninNewMexico.

  WhenThomascheckedinonthestoryafewweekslater,hewassurprisedtolearnthatithadspreadlikewildfire.Thetelltalesignsofthearticle'ssatiricalintent,suchastheApril1dateandmisspelled"AssocimatedPress"dateline,hadbeenreplacedordeleted.

  Alabamalegislatorswerebombardedwithcallsprotestingthelaw.Thelegislatorsexplainedthatthenewswasahoax.Therewasnotandneverhadbeensuchalaw.

  OnApril1,1957,theBBCairedareportonthetelevisionnewsshowPanoramaaboutthebumperspaghettiharvestinsouthernSwitzerland.

  ViewerswatchedSwissfarmerspullpastaoffspaghettitreesastheshow'sanchor,RichardDimbleby,attributedthebountifulharvesttothemildwinterandthedisappearanceofthespaghettiweevil.

  NASAquicklyrefutedtheseclaimsinaseriesofpressreleases,statingthatanyphotographerwouldknowitisdifficulttocapturesomethingverybrightandverydimonthesamepieceoffilm.Sincethephotographerswantedtocapturetheastronautsstridingacrossthelunarsurfaceintheirsunlitspacesuits,thebackgroundstarsweretoofainttosee.
