TheExpo2010ShanghaiChinaiscomingtoclose.ThisisanExpothathasattractedworldwideattention.Underthethemeof“BetterCity,BetterLife”,theExpohasputondisplaythesplendidachievementsofcontemporarycivilizations,pooledhumanwisdominexploringthepathofurbandevelopment,setmanyExpo-relatedrecords,andaddedagloriouschaptertotheExpohistory.

Expo2010Shanghaihasbeenasuccessfulevent.Atotalof246officialparticipants,including190countriesand56internationalorganizations,havetakenpartinthisExpo,morethaninanypreviousExpo.Since1May,therehavebeenmorethan70millionvisitstotheExpo,anotherrecordnumberintheExpohistory.PeoplefromaroundtheworldstreamedtotheExpoSitesituatedalongthebeautifulHuangpuRiver.Undeterredbythesearingheatorsoakingrain,theywaitedpatientlyinlonglinestowitnessthismuchanticipatedevent.Forthefirsttime,anOnlineExpowaslaunched,openinganewwindowformorepeopletobepartoftheExpo.Throughsuchextensiveparticipation,Expo2010Shanghaihastrulybroughttogetherpeoplearoundtheglobe.

Expo2010Shanghaihasbeenasplendidevent.TheExpoSite,whichcoversaboutsixsquarekilometers,islikeaglobalvillage.Here,youcanfindarichvarietyofstructures,eachwithitsdistinctandexquisitestyle,theBritishPavilionresemblingahugedandeliondancinginthebreeze,theCanadianPavilionintheshapeofamapleleaf,andtheSaudiPavilionwhichlookslikeasailingtreasureboat.Andtheyallspeaktothebestofhumaningenuity.Here,youcanseeondisplayrareculturaltreasuresoftheworld:

thebronzechariotandhorsesculpturefromChina’sWarringStatesperiod,thestatueofAthenafromGreece,themasterpiecesofFrenchimpressionistpainters,theLitterMermaidfromDenmarkandtheAldabragianttortoisesfromtheSeychelles.Theyaretrulyafeasttotheeyes.Here,over100culturalperformanceswerestagedeveryday.Throughatotalofmorethan20,000culturalevents,visitorsgotatasteofthequintessenceoftheworld’sdiverseculturesandfounditarewardingculturalexperience.Herepoliticalleaders,businesspeople,governmentofficials,expertsandscholarsgatheredtogetherattheseriesofExpoForumstoshareinsightfulviesandiscussthefutureoftheworld,firingpeoplewithimaginationandinspiration.AllthishasmadeExpo2010Shanghaianencyclopedialyingopenonthelandandamagnificentpaintingshowcasingtheintegrationandharmonyofdiversecultures.

Expo2010Shanghaihasbeenanunforgettableevent.TheExpohasbroughttogethertheChinesepeoplewhowishtolearnmoreabouttheworldandforeignfriendswhowishtoknowmoreaboutChina.ThankstotheExpo,theyhaveforgedastrongbondoffriendship.AttheopeningceremonyoftheExpo,twoTibetankidsfromtheearthquake-affectedYushucountyofQinghaiProvincejoinedkidsofdifferentcountriesanddifferentcolors.Theyembracedeachotherandheldhandstogether.Thatsceneisavividexampleofhumansolidarityandfraternityinthefaceofadversity.YamadaTomiyofromJapan,knownas“ExpoGranny,”beganher18tripstoChinafouryearsagoinanticipationoftheevent.WhentheExpoopened,shebought183ticketsandcametovisitthesiteeveryday.ThereisanoldladyinherseventiesfromthecountrysideofZhejiangProvince.SherentedasmallapartmentinShanghaitoprovidefreeaccommodationtoChineseandforeignvisitorswhilesheherselfwouldsleeponasmallcouch.Herstoryhastouchedallofus.Iwouldliketomentioninparticularthemorethan80,000volunteersattheExposite,whosegreentopsandwhitepantsearnedthemthelovelynicknameof“LittleCabbages,”andthenearlytwomillionvolunteersworkingacrossthecity.TheirbrightsmilesandhospitableservicesarethebestnamecardforarealChina.

Expo2010ShanghaiisthefirstExpoheldbyadevelopingcountry,thefirstheldinthedowntownareaofamega-city,anditwasheldundertheshadowoftheinternationalfinancialcrisis.ThisisaseveretesttoChinaandShanghai.Overthepasteightyears,wemobilizedresourcesthroughouttheCountryandpooledthewisdomoftheworldinthepreparationfortheExpo.ThepeopleofShanghai,inparticular,madeselflesscontributionsandtheInternationalExhibitionsBureauandhotcountriesofpastExposprovidedvaluableguidance.ThesuccessoftheExpocouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutthetirelesseffortsofmanypeople,includingtheorganizers,constructionworkers,staffmembers,visitorsandvolunteers.Itistheirsincerity,wisdomandhardworkthathaverenderedsplendortotheExpo.OnbehalfoftheChinesegovernment,Iwishtoexpressheartfeltgratitudeandpayhightributetoallthecomradesandfriendswhohaveparticipatedin,supportedandcontributedtotheShanghaiExpo.

Expo2010Shanghaiisaneye-openingevent,showcasingthebestmaterialachievementsofhumancivilizations.Itwillalsoleavebehindarichspirituallegacyandaconstantsourceofinspiration.ThisisthesouloftheExpo.Onlywhenthefruitsofhumancivilizationareelevatedontothespiritualandphilosophicallevelwilltheybecomethecommonassetsoftheentirehumanityandbepasseddownfromgenerationtogeneration.ItisthereforehighlyrelevantthatwereviewthisExpoandseewhatexperienceandinspirationwecandrawfromit.

TheWorldExpohaspromotedanewapproachtodevelopment,i.e.,greenenvironment-friendlyandlow-carbondevelopment.TheExpoSiteitselfisamodeloflow-carbondevelopment,wherethesolarpowergenerationsystemhasatotalinstalledcapacityof4.6megawatts,morethan1,000carsarepoweredbynewenergysources,andthe165-meter-highchimneysymbolicofindustrialcivilizationhasbeenturnedintoameteorologicalsignaltower.Manypavilionsarebuiltwiththelatestlow-carbonmaterialsandenergy-savingtechnologies,andnumerouscutting-edgelow-carbontechnologiesandproductsareondisplay.TheUrbanBestPracticeArea,thefirstofitskindintheExpohistory,illustratesthesuccessstoriesofvariouscountriesinurbandevelopmentandmanagementanddepictsanewwayoffutureurbanlifewithinterestingcasesandvividmodels.Theseinnovativeideasshowthatmankindhasacquiredamorescientificunderstandingofwhatdevelopmentmeansandbecomemorerationalandmatureinthepursuitofdevelopment.Theywillexertafar-reachingimpactontheeconomicgrowthpattern,industrialstructureandconsumptionmodel.

TheWorldExpoisconvincingproofthatscientificandtechnologicalrevolutionisastrongdrivingforcebehindsocialprogress.Scienceandtechnologyadvancesareanimportanthallmarkofsocialprogress.TheUnitedKingdomhostedthefirstWorldExpoin1851,becauseitwasthefirstcountrytolaunchtheIndustrialRevolutionandmanufacturedalargenumberoftechnologicalproducts.Theindustrialrevolutionspurredanincrediblegrowthinproductivity.Theproductivitygeneratedinthelessthan100yearsaftertheIndustrialRevolutionexceededthesumtotalofproductivityofallprevioustimes.Andthelast100yearshaveseenevengreaterincreasesofproductivitythanthe100yearsfollowingtheIndustrialRevolution.Expo2010Shanghaihasshownmankind’slatestachievementsinscienceandtechnology,suchasthenewgenerationofmobilecommunications,artificialintelligence,newmaterialsandeco-friendlyconstruction,andtheyspeakvolumesabouttheimmensehumanwisdomandcreativity.Thedevelopment,applicationanddisseminationofthesenewstechnologies,newenergysourcesandnewmaterialswillnotonlyhaveamajorimpactonthewayweworkandlive,butalsoleadthecourseofindustrialdevelopmentinthefuture.Theywillalsoprovidestrongsupportforoureffortstoovercometheunderlyingimpactoftheinternationalfinancialcrisisandpromotesustainedrecoveryoftheworldeconomy.

TheWorldExpoisavividdemonstrationofthediversityofhumancivilizations.TheShanghaiExpohasofferedabroadstageforinter-culturalexchangesandintegration,remindingusthatweliveinadiversandcolorfulworld.Here,onecanseenotonlythehigh-techproductsfromthedevelopedworldsuchastheUnitesStatesandEurope,butalsonationalcostumesandebonysculpturesuniquetoAfricaandingenioushandicraftsfromtheCaribbeanandPacificislandcountries.Theseproductsepitomizethehumanwisdomgainedoverthelongcourseofproductiveactivities,andembodythevaluesandidealsofanation.Theyarethematerialformofanation’sculture.Inadditiontotherichexhibits,thereweredazzlingartperformancesfromacrosstheworldintheExpoSiteeveryday,includingtheindigenousAfricandances,theelegantFrenchcourtdance,thepassionateArgentinetangotherefinedJapaneseNohtheatre,thelivelyEnglishfolkmusicandtheexquisitePekingopera.TheartisticqualitiesofvariouscultureshaveaddedtothelifeandappealoftheExpo.TheWorldExpotellsusthateverycountryandeverynationhasatraditionalculturetobeproudofandthateachfinecultureisafruitofhumancivilizationanddeservesourrespectandcare.Oneflowerdoesnotmakeabeautifulgarden.

TheExpohasfullydemonstratedthatequalityandharmonyisthecommonaspirationofmankind.TheExpoisafestiveeventforallpeopleintheworld,andeveryoneinvolvedintheExpoisanequalmemberofthebigExpofamily.Withoutmutualunderstandingandtrust,andwithouttheliveforpeacean
