HermanMelville,anAmericanauthorbestknowntodayforhisnovelMobyDick,wasactuallymorepopularduringhislifetimeforsomeofhisotherworks.Hetravelledextensivelyandusedtheknowledgegainedduringhistravelsasthebasisforhisearlynovels.In1837,attheageofeighteen,MelvillesignedasacabinboyonamerchantshipthatwastosailfromhisMassachusettshometoLiverpool,England.HisexperiencesonhistripservedasabasisforthenovelRedburn(1849).In1841MelvillesetoutonawhalingshipheadedfortheSouthSeas.AfterjumpingshipinTahiti,hewanderedaroundthe10islandsofTahitiandMoorea.ThisSouthSeaislandsojourn(旅居)wasabackdroptothenovelOmoo(1847).AfterthreeyearsawayfromhomeMelvillejoinedupwithaUSnavalfrigatethatwasreturningtotheeasternUnitedStatesaroundCapeHorn.ThenovelWhite-Jacket(1850)describesthislengthyvoyageasanavy15seaman.

Withthepublicationoftheseearlyadventurenovels,Melvilledevelopedastrongandloyalfollowingamongreaderseagerforhistalesofexoticplacesandsituations.However,in1851,withthepublicationofMobyDick,Melville'spopularitystartedtodiminish.MobyDick,ononelevelthesagaofthehuntforthegreatwhite20whales,wasalsoaheavilysymbolicallegoryoftheheroicstruggleofmanagainsttheuniverse.ThepublicwasnotreadyforMelville'sliterarymetamorphosisfromromanticadverturetophilosophicalsymbolism.ItisironicthatthenovelthatservedtodiminishMelville'spopularityduringhislifetimeistheoneforwhichheisbestknowntoday.
