ScientistshavelongbelievedonewaytostoptheEarth’satmospherefromwarmingisbyplantingmoretrees.Theideaisthatmoretreeswilltakeinorabsorbsomeofthecarbondioxideintheatmosphere.Carbondioxideisagasfromcars,factoriesandotherhumanactivities.ThegasholdsheatintheEarth’satmosphere,whichwarmstheplanet.However,twonewstudieshavefoundthattreesmaynotbeashelpfulinreducingcarbondioxideasthought.

ThefirststudywasdoneatDukeUniversityinDurham,NorthCarolina.Researchersgaveextracarbondioxidetoatestareawherepinetreesweregrowing.Thetreesgrewthirty-fourpercentfasterduringthefirstthreeyears.However,intime,thetreesslowedtoabouttheirnormalgrowthrate.Thescientistssaythisisbecausetreesneedotherthings,suchasnitrogen.

Inthesecondstudy,researchersfromDukeandBowdoinCollegeinBrunswick,Maineexaminedthesoilaroundtrees.Theydiscoveredthatastheleavesbrokedownintothesoil,allthecarbonwasnottrappedinthesoil.Muchofitwasreleasedintotheatmosphereascarbondioxide.

ThefindingsofthetwostudieswerepublishedlastmonthinNaturemagazine.Theysuggestthereislimitedvalueinplantingtreestoreducethecarbondioxidepollutionintheatmosphere.
