Melville’sfirsttwonovels,TypeeandOmoo,werewidelyreadandfinanciallysuccessfully.Theywerebothexcitingtalesofadventuresatseaandexperienceswithpeopleinforeignlands.Melvillebecamequitefamous.However,uponthepublicationofhisthirdbook,Mardi,Melville’spopularitybegantoweaken.Hewasnolongerinterestedintellingtalesofpureadventure,andhiswritingtookonastylethatalienated(使疏远)thegeneralreadingpublicofhistime.

MelvillepublishedMobyDickinOctoberof1851.itwasanoriginalnovel,combiningaspectsofsociologyandphilosophy,whichconfusedreadersbyitscomp

lexsymbolism.Thebooksoldpoorly.

Apartfromgiantpandas,theTibetanAntelopehasalsomovedfrom“endangered”to“nearthreatened”.AccordingtoastatementfromIUCN,theanimal’snumbersdwindledseverely–droppingfromaround1milliontoanestimated65,000-72,500inthe1980sandearly1990s–duetocommercialpoaching.Rigorous(严格的)protectionhassincebeenenforcedtoprotectthebeastsandthepopulationisnowlikelytobebetween100,000and150,000.

Despitetheimprovedstatuses,wildanimalslikethegiantpandaandtheTibetanAntelopestillfacegreatchallenges.TheIUCNwarned,forexample,thatongoingthreatsfromclimatechangecouldeliminatemorethan35percentofthepanda’sbamboohabitatinthenext80years,whichwouldreversethespeciesrecentgains.
