Earthquakesmayrightlyberankedasoneofthemostdestructiveforcesknowntoman:

Thegreatmajorityofallearthquakesoccurontwospecificareas,alongthecoastsofthePacificOceanandfromtheEastIndiestotheAtlasMountains.Buttheymay,however,happenanywhereatanytime.

Thiselementoftheunknownhasforcenturiesaddedgreatlytothefearandhorrorsurroundingearthquakes,butinrecenttimestherehavebeenindicationsthatearthquakepredictionmaybepossible.Byanalyzingchangesinanimalbehavior,patternsofmovementsintheearth'ssurface,andotherunusualphenomena,scientistshaveshownincreasingsuccessinpredictingwhenandwhereearthquakeswillstrike.Asaresult,aworldwideearthquakewarningnetworkisalreadyinoperationandhashelpedtoprepareforthevastdestructionthatmightotherwisehavebeentotallyunexpected.
